Thanis, Garamon, and Flin loose missiles, striking their targets unerringly. Men are pieced by arrow, spear, and whirling axe, but none are downed as they beat a hasty retreat through the arch and out onto the broad, stone causeway beyond. Harsh voices rise from the opposite moat house, and figures are seen scurrying to action.
All the while Stern strides grimly toward them, drawing his gleaming two-handed blade in one menacing motion...
