Olaf, Beringar, and Wen all try to back peddle out of contact with the Tar Fiend, but in truth its larger stride makes this almost futile.
With a seething cloud of dust surrounding it, the Tar Fiend takes two giant strides toward Wen before leaning directly over him to fire its deadly weapon. The red hot beam scorches the air between them, and reflects directly back that the Fiend's loathsome noggin! The beam vanishes instantly. As does the entirety of the Fiend's head and the upper part of its torso. The remaining limbs and body crash to the ground with a thunderous clatter, raising a final cloud of dust before a blessed silence descends...

Oalf, Beringar and Wen all attempt to withdraw; let's presume they get the defensive fighting bonus (-4 to hit) and are parrying versus a larger weapon (the Fiend's pile-driver fists).
Referee rolls to determine whether it will continue to attack in combat, or use its gaze weapon. 2d6=7, so it's a gaze attack!
Who will it target? Wen dealt it 5 points of damage just now so he's the hot target, but Olaf and Beringar are at about the same proximity, so let's say 1-4=Wen, 5=Olaf, 6=Beringar. 1d6=2 it's Wen. The plan seems to be coming together.
It's gaze attack is reflected back at itself, so it saves versus disintegration: 1d20=2! It's all over for the Fiend. |
