Ulric seeks the shelter of the trees while Armando assists Wen in hastily descending to the orchard before the young Elf digs a dusty old scroll from his pack and begins to utter the unknowable verse therein...
Meanwhile Highbough clambers down his tree muttering something about drawing it away from the portal as Beringar also clambers down another rope. Olaf, already in the orchard, now hastens back to the wall to free Dieter's loyal silk rope and grapple with a sharp yank, and gathers its coils to him...
On top the wall, Josiane looks up in horror as--in perfectly crystal slow motion--Dieter and Dorgan skid to a halt, Dorgan gives her a fearless wink, then the pair turn about in unison and charge directly at the LOOMING FIEND of smoldering tar and burning veins of lava! The cloud of ash and embers flying about it are almost beautiful for one still, silent moment that is etched in her memory, before the colossal din and heat and pace of action verily slaps her out of it.
| Initiative is diced: Dorgan & Dieter 1d6=5, Tar Fiend 1d6=2 |
The smoke around it glows increasingly red as the monster's baleful eye gathers its voltage for another ignition, but not quickly enough! OGRE SLAYER and THE ROCK hit it together as it too crashes into them, its arms wide and low. Half the battlement seems to be collapsing into the orchard at the impact of the impossible wrestling match!
| Now the overbearing match of the century...
Dieter and Dorgan are 4+1 and 4+3 HD, respectively, so between them they will have 8+4 dice.
The Tar Fiend is 12 HD, so it would have 12 dice. Due to its superior size I would double this, but due to the unstable footing (for it) I will halve it. So it gets 12 dice.
Dieter+Dorgan throw 8d6=6,5,3,2,1,5,6,4+4=36.
The Tar Fiend throws 12d6=1,1,1,1,1 (Lejit! Five 1s in a row!) 4,4,4,1,4,4,6=32.
Yep, when you throw 12d6 and only get 1s and 4s, the dice are talking. |
The colossus overreaches in its lunge and drives its leading leg right through the wall to knee depth, throwing itself wildly off balance. Dieter and Dorgan capitalise, grabbing its huge swiping arm, and then its torso, and twist it with all their might, causing the massive body to follow in the arc of the swinging arm, and so tumble out over the orchard amid a fantastic shower of dust and rubble.
It falls!!
And crashes into the orchard amid an avalanche of rock and dust and an Earth-shattering crash that shakes every rock, tree, and bone, and sends those below sprawling to escape being crushed.
| Alas, Olaf and Torben are right below the fall site, so they will need to save versus breath weapon or suffer two dice damage.
Olaf 1d20=9 (needs 12+)
Torben 1d20=13 (needs 15+)
Both fail to save so sustain 2d6=7 hit points damage.
Both are sorely hurt, but survive.
The Tar Fiend also suffers 2d6=7 hit points damage in the fall. |
Just as the tsunami of dust engulfs him, Wen completes his enchantment; the scroll sublimes into a vapour that--for half a moment--smells vividly like hyena breath, then his sight goes thunk and his eyes go bright mercury.
There seems to be a moment's pause.
Then, something dark and massive stirs amid the rubble...
What next?
