The Gustave is too busy enjoying his new pipe to notice insinuating glances or contemplate wooden bowls.

Re: Out Of Character

Well, if nobody else really wants to take the Lentive Demitasse (wooden bowl/cup of healing), Torben has plenty of room and carrying capacity. In addition to the shortbow and quiver, Torben will take Rufus' hand axe, and iron spikes (x4).

Re: Out Of Character

I think all magic items are accounted for at this point, unless we've overlooked a magical short sword sitting around somewhere?

Re: Out Of Character

Which magical short sword? The one behind the Dwarven Thrower, +3?

Re: Out Of Character

Ways, what happens if someone claims a magic item, uses it and gets the XP, and then gives it up?

I just want to make sure if we do find the Sisters of Mercy, we can still exchange their artifacts for Olaf's lost level.

This has been a tricky issue with D&D forever. The 3LBBs (and hence Delving Deeper) don't talk specifically about awarding XP for magic-items. But the OD&D FAQ article has this to say:
Experience: Low value should be placed upon magical items as far as experience is concerned, as such items will be highly useful in gaining stilI more treasure. Thus, in the Greyhawk campaign a magic arrow (+1) is worth a maximum of 100 points experience, a +1 magic sword with no special abilities is valued at a maximum of 1,000 points, a scroll of spells at either 500 or at 100 points per level per spell ( so a 6th level spell is worth a maximum of 600 experience points), a potion is worth between 250 and 500 points, and even a genie ring is worth no more than about 5,000 points maximum.
The exact XP figures are pretty vague and don't line up neatly with later references (i.e., the DMG) so I'm inclined to approximate them to: XP award == 1/4 gp value (or 1/4 sp value in Hinterlands terms).

Once a temporary/consumable item has been used, the XP cannot be revoked--other than by energy drain attacks.

If a permanent magic item is surrendered, the XP will be lost. This could, theoretically, result in level loss.

Re: Out Of Character

Personally, I'm not concerned with XP for magic items. I've always agreed with the assessment that having/using the magic item precludes earning any significant XP for it...

Of course, that's just me.

Re: Out Of Character

Highbough shows a surprising lack of interest in the magic items (he is trying to downplay his magical ability while in Elf Town) and frankly wouldn't want to be bothered over pocket change. Talk to him when it adds up to 100gp or more. As mentioned previously, his two immediate purchases would be a clean set of Elf-style clothing, and a pack full of neatly-wrapped lembas; he never wants to be forced to eat warg steak ever again!

You know, we've been throwing bouquets toward Ways for a while now, and rightfully so, but I think it's time we acknowledged another bravura performance.

I can't be the only one thoroughly enjoying Highbough 2.0, right? Great work, mg.

I call him "mn"... because the "g" is silent.
