Wen, Torben, Josiane, Dorgan, Desmond/Mondes, and Armando all turtle down into defensive positions; Desmond blasting blindly on his silver whistle while Dorgan clangs his shield defying the enemy to challenge him. Ulric dives deeper into his sorcerous trace conjuring improbable missiles as Gustave, Highbough, Dieter, and Guntram launch into a counter offensive, spears and swords dashing against goblin shields and wolf hides as they press for any advantage.
The company momentarily seem to have the initiative as the remaining goblin riders hesitate and a number of wargs round for another pass. They seize it and Ulric send four eerie-dark missiles from the void at the nearest goblins in the churning fray, blasting three goblins clear out of their saddles--their entrails preceding them in a puce splatter-- (3 dead) and glancing the skull of a fourth with a like missile (-2 hp).
But the wargs are so many! Everywhere our fighters turn there is a warg, fangs, jaws, and claws tearing and flashing in the snarl of melee. Dieter slashes open a howling warg's flank (-5 hp), but his fellows make no inroads; the goblins blocking out blow after blow with their shields and cleavers. And while they press, those defending suffer a grueling assault! Dorgan taunted them, and the wargs come! His cries are drowned in the din as (it seems) all the world's wargs fall upon the lone dwarf, battering against him (-5-6 hp, no helmet). Somewhere in the knot of defenders, Josiane sees Ulric is rent again (-2 hp), and throws herself into harm's way too protect the grim-faced enchanter, saving him from a mortal blow (-6 hp, no helmet)... and Josiane knows nothing more.
The battle field is a wrecking yard; the noise seems impossible to bear.
Unseen to those engaged, the two warg-riders in the lead group who were not incinerated have already turned and run off at a full gallop...
| Mechanics for the second combat turn:
Ref checks enemy morale: Warg losses are 5/19, less than 1/3, so no morale check required for the wargs.
Goblin losses are 8/19, more than 1/3, so morale will be checked at -1 for loss of Him That Spoke, and -1 for daylight.
2d6-2=6 so the goblins will fight defensively, but the wargs are still eager as ever.
Initiative is checked: PCs 1d6=4, wargs 1d6=3. The players have the initiative.
Ulric's sorcerous fulmination 4x1d6+1=6,5,7,2 damage. Three goblins are slain, ref rolls hit points for the 4th goblin; 1d6-1=4; so it is wounded.
Dieter; 2d20=10, 17; hits a warg 1d6=5 for 5 damage.
Gustave; 2d20=2, 12; misses a goblin; only because they are on the defensive.
Highbough; 1d20=12; misses a goblin; only because they are on the defensive.
Guntram; 1d20=2; a hopeless miss!
Reaction roll to Desmond's whistle 2d6=7; no notable response...
The Goblins are on the defensive, so no attacks but AC5 this turn.
Warg attacks are randomised in the melee:
1=Wen, 2=Torben, 3=Josiane, 4,5=Dorgan (who's calling them in), 6=Desmond/Mondes, 7=Armando, 8=Ulric, 9=Gustave, 10=Highbough, 11=Dieter, 12=Guntram...
12d12=2,3,4,4,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11.
So the warg attacks are:
Torben (d20=3, miss),
Josiane (d20 vs AC6=16, hit),
Dorgan x4! (4d20 vs AC1 due to defense=20,16,19,12, two hits),
Desmond/Mondes (d20 vs AC2=9+4, miss),
Armando (d20=3, miss),
Ulric (d20 vs AC5 due to Josiane's defense=20, hit),
Gustave (d20 vs AC3=13, miss),
Highbough (d20=7, miss)
Dieter (d20=9, miss).
Damage is rolled for hits versus:
Josiane=6, alas she has no helmet (would have ablated it)
Dorgan x2=6,5, alas he has no helmet (would have ablated the 6)
Ulric=2.
Warning Signs
Josiane is incapacitated on exactly 0 hit points!
Ulric has 3/8 hit points.
Torben has 2/8 hit points.
Highbough has 6/6 hit points. |
