January 2nd, Hobbet Adventure Year 2 (HAY 2)
Wilbur the Quite Tall dreams he is at the prow of an enormous sailing ship. As far as his eyes can see, nothing but water. The only sounds are the gentle lapping of the waves and the rhythmic creaking of the ship's timbers. Look! There on the horizon: Land! A new world of Excitement, Possibility, and Adventure!
Wilbur awakens from this wonderful dream and is momentarily disoriented, unsure of his surroundings. The dream is gone, but the wooden creaking sound is real! Then it all comes flooding back to him: The toboggan ride, the body in the snow, crawling through dark tunnels, caverns full of giant puffballs, the battle with the ghouls. The terrible wound he suffered, and how it paralyzed him with fear! It takes a minute for Wilbur to realize he is safe. He looks around him and sees his new companions, snoring on their cots, snug as bugs in rugs.
The rhythmic creaking sound is of course the old windmill. The Hobbets have taken over part of the grain storage area as a makeshift Clubhouse. It's a place for them to sleep at night, store their equipment, and stay out of Frederick's hair when necessary. Last night was Wilbur's first night, but the others have been staying here for a couple of weeks and are used to the sound by now.
Each of the Hobbets wakes up feeling refreshed and well-rested. Everyone carefully checks their inventory, making sure they have everything they will need for the next Adventure. The only thing missing is PANCAKES, and it is high time for pre-first-breakfast, the most important meal of the day!
It's a cool and overcast morning, with a few snowflakes swirling in the air. There is a small clearing between the windmill and the House of Pancakes. As our Heroes are about to cross the clearing, they notice a group of three Human boys congregating at the front door of the restaurant. They are banging on the door and rattling the knob.
"Whadda ya mean CLOSED?!? T'aint no holiday. We want pamcakes! Yeah! Pamcakes! PAM! CAKES! PAM! CAKES! PAM! CAKES! Come on, this is stupid. Let's get out of here. Yeah. Stupid."
The boys give up and trudge back down the hill toward the town. From behind and if you don't have to listen to them talk, they are actually kind of adorable in their flannel snowsuits, with their shocks of curly red hair and their oversized earmuffs.
The Human boys don't appear to have noticed you. Do you call out to them, or do you let them go home?
