The Second Vault
(Dieter, Olaf, Pelenwin, Desmond/Mondes, Wibert, Ulric)

In the second vault it is sheer mayhem! The tide of undead press every inward against the hewing blades and axes of Dieter, Olaf, Pelenwin and Desmond/Mondes.

"Not in this ruckus!" shouts Pelenwin to Olaf; already beset by enemy there is no chance he could pause to intone a prayer without getting killed for his effort.

Initiative is rolled (1d6; Dieter=2+1, 4+1, Olaf=2, 2, Pelenwin=2-2, Desmond/Mondes=2, Enemy=2. How many 2s can I roll??).

Dieter, stomps and cleaves about him angrily (2d20=9, 20!) again smashing the undead grievously for (2dd=5,1 and 3dd=5,2,4) 7 and 7 hit points, dismembering one monster with his sword and crushing the head of an uprising fiend under his war-boot.

Excepting Pelenwin, the others attack simultaneously with the undead. (1d20; Olaf=10, 9, Desmond/Mondes=5, enemy=1, 17, 16, 2)

Olaf too lashes mightily with his blade (2dd=3,4 and 4,6) for 6 and 8 hit points, cutting two of the monsters down, but Desmond and Mondes seem still to be going in opposite directions, and the cold iron axe makes no contact. The dead simultaneously press in and score hits against Desmond and Pelenwin for (1dd=4 and 3) 4 and 3 hit points, respectively. Pelenwin is down to 1 hit point, but he finally riposts with his great axe (1d20=12) chopping his foe down (3dd=5,2,3) with a 5 hit point blow.

A few scant yards away, Wibert hastily investigates the edifice. It is a strange thing indeed... a semi-sphere of stone carved in the vague likeness of a man-shape, and with an inset depression which would exactly accommodate a man within the stone. It looks... almost comfortable. Wibert doesn't find any secret door by which to escape, but he does notice a series of fine channels in the man-shaped depression in the stone, which appear to culminate in a finger-width hole at the bottom of each heel. These open into a rim-like bowl at the front base of the edifice, which also has a hole in its bottom. This appears to go straight down into the floor...

What now?

The fight is going well; keep grinding out the XP, and let Highbough know if you need a breather on the front line (he's got mad skills with the spear).

OOC: Sounds like Pelenwin needs to step back and let someone else take his place. Or at least close up the ranks.

"We seem to have reached something of a stalemate" observes Gustave from behind his shield, brow raising momentarily as Highboughs spear wafts menacingly past his ear.

Not wanting to disturb Josiane, he addresses Dorgan: "This holy stuff is all well and good, but I don't suppose the madame has anything more...dramatic, in her bag of tricks perchance?"

"No stalemate, friend," says Dorgan as he notes the reaction to Josiane's chant. He looks over at Gustave and winks.

"If the Miss is gonna hold 'em steady, I'm gonna carve 'em up."

Dorgan will take advantage of their "frozen" status and chop another one down, being careful to brace for their reaction and not get too close to the others, if possible. He likes the idea of his attack ending with another 30' drop for the zombie and will endeavor to make it happen again, again, if possible.

"Ah", responds Gustave, as the dwarf throws himself into the fray, "are all of your folk so pragmatic?"

With barely a pause to consider the ramifications of liters of corpse juices on his new livery, Gustave joins Dorgan in his carving.

If and only if it's not going to risk breaking her concentration Josiane will attempt to take a step towards the fray, looking to see if an advance on her part will cause the Undead to fall back.

But if she can't do that she'll hold her position, concentrating on maintaining her chant.

"Pelenwin step back!" says Olaf as he side steps to close the ranks a little to give the Templar a chance to step back and bind his wounds. The lanky warrior does not pause in his attacks against the undead monsters, though.

"Don't let them flank us!" he says between slashes and stabs, "And for heaven's sake, don't turn your back on them!!"

"If we have to make a fighting withdrawal, Pelenwin, you shout orders to us so we can back up in unison." Olaf shouts as he slams his shield forward trying to force the undead back...or at least to keep more from piling in through the opening into this room.

OOC: I missed the last round it seems. Apologies. I could always lob a fireball down the zombie-choked passage.
