The Second Vault
(Dieter, Olaf, Pelenwin, Desmond/Mondes, Wibert, Ulric)
In the second vault it is sheer mayhem! The tide of undead press every inward against the hewing blades and axes of Dieter, Olaf, Pelenwin and Desmond/Mondes.
"Not in this ruckus!" shouts Pelenwin to Olaf; already beset by enemy there is no chance he could pause to intone a prayer without getting killed for his effort.
Initiative is rolled (1d6; Dieter=2+1, 4+1, Olaf=2, 2, Pelenwin=2-2, Desmond/Mondes=2, Enemy=2. How many 2s can I roll??).
Dieter, stomps and cleaves about him angrily (2d20=9, 20!) again smashing the undead grievously for (2dd=5,1 and 3dd=5,2,4) 7 and 7 hit points, dismembering one monster with his sword and crushing the head of an uprising fiend under his war-boot.
Excepting Pelenwin, the others attack simultaneously with the undead. (1d20; Olaf=10, 9, Desmond/Mondes=5, enemy=1, 17, 16, 2)
Olaf too lashes mightily with his blade (2dd=3,4 and 4,6) for 6 and 8 hit points, cutting two of the monsters down, but Desmond and Mondes seem still to be going in opposite directions, and the cold iron axe makes no contact. The dead simultaneously press in and score hits against Desmond and Pelenwin for (1dd=4 and 3) 4 and 3 hit points, respectively. Pelenwin is down to 1 hit point, but he finally riposts with his great axe (1d20=12) chopping his foe down (3dd=5,2,3) with a 5 hit point blow.
A few scant yards away, Wibert hastily investigates the edifice. It is a strange thing indeed... a semi-sphere of stone carved in the vague likeness of a man-shape, and with an inset depression which would exactly accommodate a man within the stone. It looks... almost comfortable. Wibert doesn't find any secret door by which to escape, but he does notice a series of fine channels in the man-shaped depression in the stone, which appear to culminate in a finger-width hole at the bottom of each heel. These open into a rim-like bowl at the front base of the edifice, which also has a hole in its bottom. This appears to go straight down into the floor...
What now?
