Gustave, Desmond, Wibert, Dorgan & Pelenwin; The Temple Grounds

Introductions are made, hands shaken, and shoulders clapped, while the eerie chorus drifts from the temple, behind.

Pelenwin is aware that the Deacon was up late with his bottle of brandy and old scrolls and tomes investigating Wibert's dagger.

He also knows that there is a cloister of the Sisters of Mercy behind the temple. This would surely be the ideal place for Desmond/Mondes and Gustave to weal their illness. However, the place is behind a high wall, and completely forbidden to Men...

To Dorgan, Pelenwin can say that the Deacon has complained yesterday of grave robbers disturbing the dead to pinch petty trinkets of small worth; rings, buckles, broaches and the like. It sounded like a complaint he was repeating for the hundredth time. Alas the Deacon has too few Templars to maintain a ceaseless vigil over the graveyard! None the less, Pelenwin half suspected that this duty might fall to him...

"Well met, Friends," welcomes Pelenwin upon their arrival. "It seems that it is only since two days that I arrive, and already I am restless with wanderlust. Indeed the Decon investigates you dagger, Wibert's, pouring through sacred scrolls with only a bottle of brandy for company. Not more fit for clerical work than me, I suppose. But with him, even dealing forcefully with grave robbers is too much.

"The Sisters of Mercy, Desmond, may have the talent to cure your ills, and yours too, Gustave. But frankly, getting in is a challenge, for men at least. I wouldn't mind getting a peek in there, though - heard they no about in there with nothing but laurel leaves round their thighs."

On the way to the library, Ulric walks beside Josiane.

"I apologize for being so aloof," he says to the young woman. "My mind has been occupied by many mysteries. Perhaps we may discuss your discoveries of the walking dead in the city this evening after we have completed our studies? I have read of Vampeers, but I have only passing knowledge of them."

waysoftheearth wrote:"The library isn't open to the public until the hour before noon," sneers the crabby old fellow triumphantly as the bizarre trio reach his desk.
Ulric looks at the concierge and nods at his announcement.

"I see, I see. But surely the rule is not completely arbitrary? My colleagues and I are eager to pursue our studies. Your library is well known and quite impressive. Perhaps two shillings each would allow us to enter a little earlier than the general public?"

"'Tis but a rumor, good man. 'Tis but a rumor. Well, not that you aren't allowed - the laurel I mean. If there's a way in, it is unknown to me. Perhaps, however, there is a way to ask them to come out here."

"Come, my friend, we will deal with these issues as one."

Pelenwin will lead his companions to a more knowledgeable and higher ranking priest (although not too high ranking). With luck, he will know of a female, with whom to make the request of entrance or exit on his fellows' behalf.

"No apology is necessary, Lord Ulric," says Josiane with a smile; "I would be honoured by and grateful for your advice. I know something of the lore regarding these creatures, but I do not pretend my knowledge of their ways is anywhere near complete."

She frowns. "However, with the Lady's aid I hope this day to add to my understanding of one of their number at least." She sighs; "If that was truly what came against us in that terrible place. I cannot be certain. But I feel..."

She shudders, a shadow passing across her fair face, and draws her cloak tighter around her, as if feeling a sudden chill in this fair sunshine.

Inside, Olaf sees the narrow premises is neat and clean. A small bell on the back of the door tinkles as he enters and two thick-necked lads dressed in ridiculously tight formal shirts with starched cuffs and collars and bright brassy buttons look up from their formal chairs, but make no move. These are apparently "the help", although neither offer to help the fighting-Men with their burdens.

Behind a small counter at the far end of the narrow room an impeccably dressed, balding and bespectacled Goblin observes Dieter and Olaf carefully as they approach. Re-evaluating their net worth with every pace.

"Yyyyess?" inquires the Snork.
"Um, yes." Olaf repeats at the Snork.

"I understand you change money here, right?" Olaf says, "My friends and I have collected a goodly bit of coin and might be interested in consolidating coppers into silvers and silvers into gold...if you know what I mean."

"What are your rates? For example, what's the rate for turning copper coins into silver ones?" the tall young man asks.

Highbough glowers at the concierge as the money changes hands. Something is wrong with this town; goblins running banks and venerable Elves turned away from the library.

Josiane, Ulric and Highbough; The Concourse Library

"The library is for the use of the Concourse Patrons," explains the concierge, his beady eyes never leaving the silver coins upon the desk.

"If you simply must have use it so frequently," he pushes the little stack of silver back toward Ulric "Then might I suggest you become a Patron of the Traders' concourse... for a mere sixty silver shillings." he concludes smugly.
