Combat resets the 'rest turn clock.' You're definitely allowed a rest turn after the battle with the skeleton. The warren of tunnels north of area #2 are exactly the right size for a giant sloth to squeeze through. The hobbets would not have any problem exploring the burrow (in single-file marching order).
To refresh your memory about area #10, it looked like an excavated pit with a minecart ramp spiralling down into the darkness. The air felt damp and you got the impression, maybe it was an old quarry, flooded with water at the bottom.
