Re: Out Of Character

I'll have to look this up later tonight, but (from memory) I think Chainmail says that Hobbits can fire slings thrice in the time others can otherwise fire twice. If true, that might be a handy little bonus for Desmond ;)

If so, then I'm glad he held on to his sling!

Not that it really matters in this case, since Dieer finished the job, but isn't there an order in which things are resolved in this system, too? Like ranged attacks first, then melee, then casting (or something like that)? Or is that a totally different system and I'm just way off?

LOL! Yes, of course. Missiles would generally be resolved first in circumstances where the attacker has to close ground in order to contact those firing. But in the circumstance we just had, Desmond couldn't shoot first because there was no line of sight thru Dieter.

Ah, understood. I guess it is just a wall they are standing on, after all.

I'm just glad I'm remembering the rules properly!

Re: Out Of Character

I'll have to write all this up more formally when I get time, but...

I've consulted the body of lore otherwise known as "the original D&D rules" (upon which the DD rules are squarely founded).

Missile guys are usually allowed two attacks per turn if they don't move. And, every two Hobbits firing with sling count as three guys firing.

So... it seems like a "plausible" translation for D&D scale combat that a Hobbit who doesn't move can throw three attacks per turn with a sling.

Re: Out Of Character

Don't Hobbits get a +2 bonus to attack with slings as well? Either way, it's lethal.

Re: Out Of Character

That +2 would be cool! Either way, though, Desmond will ditch the bow and arrows (anyone want them?) and pull out his sling next time the need arises (which will probably be just a round or two).

Re: Out Of Character

In Chainmail's missile firing rules, two Hobbits firing sling stones count as three firing.
In OD&D Hobbits are "deadly accuracy with missiles as detailed in CHAINMAIL".
In Greyhawk, Hobbits instead have a +3 attack adjustment with slings.

Delving Deeper covers rules from OD&D + relevant rules from Chainmail. It doesn't generally include material from Greyhawk.

Officially, DD gives Hobbits +1 to hit with any missiles--admittedly that was a "compromise" rule, cos it is actually quite tricky to translate Chainmail's missile rules into D&D terms.

However, for Hinterlands I have the option to "house rule" on top of standard DD, so it might be fun to play around with the two/three shots business rather than an attack adjustment ;)
