Wen has spent some time examining the staff; but it appears to be a mundane thing, if of rather good quality.

The passages are wide enough that two un-armoured men could walk side by side, but not quite wide enough for two fighting-man with weapons ready abreast. So Torben is slightly ahead of Dieter (a good wing man if ever there was one).
