The West Way
(Torban, Rufus, Gustave, Ulric, Guntram and Armando)

At the rear of the group, Rufus stops to locate torch, flint and steel, and tinder from his pack, and to kneel in the dimness and arduously strike up a spark from flint and steel, so that it should fall upon a tiny ball of dried bark fibers placed for exactly such a purpose, so that they should hiss and smoulder under the sparks, so that he can lower his face and gently blow upon them, so as to encourage a tiny flame to grow therein, so that he can take it to the pitch upon the torch, so that it will, after some minutes of all this, spring into flame.

Meanwhile, Gustave makes way in the narrow passage so that Ulric can bring his lantern forth to provide better illumination for Armando...

...who is presently a little way ahead of the other, at the very cusp of the entry into the chamber to the right... listening.

The snuffling sound stops abruptly as Gustaveand the others continue to organise themselves, and long shadows cast by Ulric's bobbing lantern light jangle gaudily upon the floor and walls...

"Aha...", hisses Gustave, "so...we stand against the hounds of corruption?", he whirls his blade somewhat dramtically in the dark, perhaps beheading a fearsome beast, "So be it."

"Mayhaps we can hold at the door while we regroup", he says, poised between retreat and facing the blackness where the enemy lurks, "If they come...I fear they will meet the unpleasant end of some sorcerous flame", he adds, seeing a rouge-tinted glint in Ulrics eye.

He turns to the hobbit and his pile of smoking leaves, "Rufus! run fetch the others!"

Dorgan fishes out the previous Marrowstone while Wen focuses all four of his animated candle flames upon the very wick of a mundane candle, where they whiz about in a tight know for a slow count of three before the candle is lit.

When the fey little lights zip away, there are but three.
Just to clarify here... so did one of the candelabras get lit? Or just one of the candles on the candelabra? And that made one of Wen's lights go out?

"We need some torches lit. Does anyone have any handy? If not, we'll need to get some from the pack animal...", Desmond says, not liking the dark too much.

The candelabras are empty -- whatever candles they may have once held were all melted away during the fires.

Wen has a lit candle in one hand, and is putting its flame to another at this very moment...

Dorgan now holds the Marrowstone reverently in both hands and closes his eyes to give it his whole concentration. In his mind it thrums deeply, resonating with echoes of its millennium-long life as the mountain's heart... and reaching out to the minerals deposits it then knew...

And Dorgan suddenly knows what the mountain's heart knows; there's gold and silver here, and not too far. It's in the direction of the runic double door out in the passage... and somewhat downward.

Meanwhile, Josiane enters the library and pokes tentatively at a few ashes on the nearest shelves. Whatever knowledge once resided here has been destroyed utterly. The books and scrolls and tomes and volumes are now but heaps of cold ash...

Dorgan finally opens his eyes, and then immediately replaces the Marrowstone in his pack.

Sliding the pack back on his shoulders, the dwarf relays the news.

"Well, there's definitely some treasure here. Bad news is, it's behind them runes on that door. And down a bit, too, mebbe in a cellar or somethin'."

Dorgan will take a look around the room. He's no thief but he knows a thing or two about hidden passageways.

"I'm gonna poke about here a bit. Lemme know when we're ready for door #2."
