To start out, we had attack and defensive capabilities as two separate things.
If these two separate things get rolled into a single stat called HD, then attack capability (number of attacks vs normal, THAC2 versus fantastics) and defence capability(number of hits that can be sustained) will always scale proportionally.
If, on the other hand, we keep a separate FC stat for attack (number of attacks vs normal, THAC2 versus fantastics) and HD stat for defence (number of hits that can be sustained) then we have more options when it comes to differentiating figures. I.e., it becomes possible to have a figure with loads of HD but weak attack, or a figure with few HD but strong attack. More awkward to do that with just a single HD stat.
