I believe the plan was to head to the elevator, and thence down to level 4. Perhaps a bit risky for our newest recruit, but levels 1-3 are already mostly picked clean.

You make your way through the well-known main corridors to the rickety elevator, and crowd in. You press the button marked 4, and the elevator lurches and starts to descend. A shirt time later, the elevator stops, and the northern door opens (sometimes the elevator opens on its south side, and sometimes the north side, depending on the level).

As the door starts to open, are there any standard routines/precautions/actions you have? Who knows what is on the other side of the door

Maloof will crouch down low so that anyone behind him can attack easily if necessary.

He's already very low even without crouching, but it can't hurt! Also, this way he's even MORE inconspicuous to the inevitable medusas!
