The two guards seem unperturbed initially, but then jump to the alert as they see that the figures approaching their position are not kobolds at all! But by the time they are one their feet Mot's sorcerous incantation is already complete.
His scroll vapourises into motes of moonlight that twinkle for a moment before vanishing into nothingness, and the two thickset reptilian guardians topple into a hissing slumber. Their spears and shields clatter to the ground and their forked tongues dangle limply out the sides of their crocodile jaws.
The kobold is quite surprised by this very unusual behaviour, and pokes tentatively at one on the sleepy brutes...
"Wassup?" it inquires.
The referee rolls a reaction check for the guards, figuring a -2 penalty due to all the noise of the recent melee, but also a +2 because the charmed kobold is happily leading the way (2d6=9) resulting in an 9. It's a positive result, so the guards must have figured it was simply the kobold party returning to base after whatever tomfoolery they were up to.
Alas for them. Only at the last moment do they see their error, but by then it is too late. The referee rolls to determine the effectiveness of Mot's sleep spell (3d6=6) (the referee privately wonders if there could possibly have been a better roll?) and 6 HD of creatures are affected.
The Lizardmen (for lizardmen they are) are 2+1 HD creatures, so they will soak up 3 HD worth of sleep each. Mot's magic is exactly strong enough to sleep the pair of them without affecting anyone else!
