Well... just for example, consider Karl.
The most he can get to without cracking 3rd level is what, 3,999 XP?
According to his sheet, he currently has 1,659 XP.
Add to that
1659+3241 = 4,900. Excluding any XP bonus. So... there's a non-zero risk of wasting XP... if you do it carefully, you might might benefit is all I'm saying.

Ways is saying the 4 survivors get a base of 2,212, if you picked up a Bleakmass gift take +50xp. Then also take my monster XP, 1029 for Karl, 681 for the others. Karl and Leudigar survived the first delve and had some XP already. So you have to be at least 3241xp + 50? + What you had before this adventure. You're 2nd level and close to (maybe very very close) to 3rd.
Zem's total 2943 + 5% (14 Str) = 3090
Don't forgot to apply your xp % bonus also
