Torben

Torben looks at Armando with silent questioning as to whether he's heard anything. In either case, he'll motion to be the first through the door.

Meanwhile, Desmond pushes the door inward. It swings easily and silently inward upon experienced hinges. The unmistakable scent of ashes washes over the Halfling as he peers into the cool, dark place. It seems to deaden any sound.
"Ashes?" Desmond whispers the question to nobody in particular. "Hopefully from a fireplace, and not the charred remains of a dragon's meal..."

"Wen, light the room, please?"

He raises his shield (helm already replaced) and draws his sword and enters the room as soon as Wen lights the way.

OOC: Gotta admit, I love the mobility of those lights, and not having to have anyone in the party hold a torch...

Wen would tear his eyes away from the Glyph'd door and recall the candle. "I wonder what those runes say? Just as well they are probably a variation on - Go Away, least you die.."

Wen would send the candles spinning around the room hoping to distract anything hiding within.

OOC: I agree about the candles, Waysoftheearth did a really nice job on his spell lists. It makes the 1st level mages feel almost useful.

Armando shrugs emotively to indicate an absence of noises from beyond the door. He slips the crowbar back into his pack and draws his short sword. After briefly investigating for any sort of trick or trap, he'll prepare to pull the door open on Torben's signal.

The West Passage
(Torban, Rufus, Gustave, Ulric, Guntram and Armando)

With Torban and Gustave ready (shoulder to shoulder occupying the full width of the narrow passage) immediately behind him -- and denying him any possibility of a hasty retreat -- Armando turns the door handle, and easily pushes the door inward. It swings slowly and silently on its hinges.

Beyond, Armando sees another, similarly proportioned, passageway that progresses only 20ft or so before the right-hand wall goes no further, instead a cool, dark space of indeterminate size opens out. The left hand wall continues as far as the eye can make out.

All is still and quiet.

What now?

The Austere Passage
(Josiane, Desmond/Mondes, Dorgan, Dieter and Wen)

Desmond/Mondes and Dorgan stand in the doorway as Wen sends his host of candle-flames flitting into the chamber beyond.

By the feeble illumination of the dancing flames they do espy a large, timber paneled room of numerous nooks and alcoves whose walls and floor are scorched and charred with old burns. Many of the walls are floor to ceiling shelves, and these as well as the floor are heaped with the ashes and the burned remnants of ruins books and tomes.

The smell of the burning is a strong tang in the air, despite the ashes being long cold. There is not a single in-tact text in sight.

The "library" as it must once have been, goes deeper and further back than you can see from the door way.

Nothing stirs.

What now?
