The Austere Passage
(Josiane, Desmond/Mondes, Dorgan, Dieter and Wen)

Desmond/Mondes creeps into the new passage, which Josiane notes might be just about wide enough for two men with spears to advance.

He pads up to the central door cautiously, and once more Desmond removes his helm to listen, while Mondes remains protected and continues to glance about suspiciously.

(1d6)

He hears... complete silence. Not just quiet, but silence.

With his other set of eyes he determines that the door swings outward, into the space beyond. It looks to be in good working order; it's probably been used a hundred times if it's been used once!

Meanwhile, Josiane's eyes fall across the double door ahead, and she spies that there are some kind of glyphs worked into the metal bindings that sprawl widely across the redoubtable timbers. They are... complex. She'd need to get a closer look to make any sense of them.

The West Passage
(Torban, Rufus, Gustave, Ulric, Guntram and Armando)

Armando leads the way west, followed by Gustave with his eager blade, Ulric with his lantern, then Torban, Guntram and Rufus.

Soon enough they reach a closed door in the narrow passage -- much more easily visible to Armando this time by proper lantern light.

Eeeek!! Josiane is making a point of not looking too closely at the runes; not yet anyway.

"Beware yon runes!" she murmurs to the others; "I have heard tales of death waiting for the unwary in such things. Let us concentrate on the left hand door for now."

Wen's candles flit down the passage way to illuminate the double door -- the "runes" are wrought as part of the elaborate hinges and bindings and sprawl artistically across the width of the door; the work in steel has the complexity and density of a script, but if they are, they are not any tongue known to Wen.

Meanwhile, Desmond pushes the door inward. It swings easily and silently inward upon experienced hinges. The unmistakable scent of ashes washes over the Halfling as he peers into the cool, dark place. It seems to deaden any sound.

Armando notes that the door should open inward before lowering his ear once more...

And this time he can discern no sound beyond.
