In the fountain chamber, the light of Taines' and Ulric's lanterns lurch in a frantic dance with the shadows as they melee against the horrible water monster.

(Initiative is rolled; Taines 1d6=2(-1), Victor 1d6=1, Mads 1d6=5(+1), Ulric 1d6=1, Monster 1d6=6)

Mads sees an opportunity almost immediately and slashes again with his antique axe. This time his aim is exquisite (1d20=20!) and he gouges a great furrow through the watery tentacle even as it reforms for another strike (3dd=6,1,1) causing anther 3 hit-points.

"Wee ssslaysss!" threatens the monster in a frightening, almost imperceptable, hiss in the common tongue. It strikes with cobra like speed (1d20=19) at Taines who is caught awkwardly attempting to dislodge his axe from the fountain centerpiece. The monster's aqueous limb (or neck?) slams into the Dwarf's head and upper torso with torential force, immediately extinguishing his lamp. Taines is completely engulfed by the churning water and thrust entirely off the ground -- the poor Dwarf is being being strangled and drowned at the same time! Despite a desperate struggle, Taines cannot avert the unnatural suffocation (save 1d20=11) and is drowned!

Seeing his companion's urgent plight, Victor hews furiously at the trunk of the tentacle (1d20=17) and dashes his morning-star powerfully into the incomprehensible beast for a further (2dd=4,5) 2 hit-points. At this there is a terrible hiss of "Cursssesss youooo!" before the water tentacle -- and the Dwarf -- drop lifeless to the chamber floor with an almighty splash.

Ulric, eyes already afire in preparation to unleash his sorcery, realises at the last moment that the need has passed, and he reverts his course before causing harm to his half soaked fellows...
  • Only Ulric's lantern remains lit.
  • The monster appears to have been vanquished.
  • Taines has 0 hit-points, and will die next round without aid.

Meanwhile, at the passage intersection the gruelling contest of arms between the living and the dead continues...

(Initiative is rolled; Olaf 1d6=6, Rodrick 1d6=3(-1), Monsters 1d6=4)

Olaf's over zealousness seems (at first) to pay dividends, for he immediately spies a chance and lunges in with his gleaming sword (1d20=20!) and scores what would surely be a fatal blow to any Man (3dd=3,4,5) causing 6 hit-points as he skewers the second shambling corpse right through its scrawny neck! But to Olaf's horror and disbelief, the ghastly foe still wheezes putrescent air in an abominable attempt at speech as it struggles to claw for him!

At this moment Rorick thankfully performs the coup de grace against the vile monster, smashing the chattering skull for a further (1dd=6) 7 hit-points and knocking it entirely off the shoulders with his torch, sending a shower of tiny sparks to the floor as the skull hits the wall and the decapitated body collapses.

As the broken head clatters to the ground, Olaf is already beset by a third horrific monster, this one pulling itself around the corner and slashing (1d20=14) Olaf with its grisly, stone hard talons for (1dd=3) 3 hit-points of damage.

But far more dreadful than this... the stomach of every Man near knots in fear as the first of the pestilent corpses -- which was smitten to the earth -- heaves itself up awkwardly and lives yet again!

Olaf has but 2 of 6 hit-points remaining.

Despite two of four monsters having been slain, there now appear to be three of the four monsters remaining!

In the passage way beyond the fountain chamber, Anwyn finally sets a spark to the oiled tallow of her torch, and turns where she kneels as she raises the torch above her...

...and immediately spies her danger!

The passage ahead grows thicker with cobwebs and refuse until it more resembles a tunnel of web than any mason's work. Not a dozen yards from where she kneels, Anwyn spies a horrible arachnid of great size which had been advancing silently toward her. It pauses momentarily as if the light has confounded it...

Mads the Fair

Noting Taines limp form in the low light, Mads rushes over to his aid. "What to do, what to do..." he mutters. Mads puts his hands on Taines' chest and begins rudimentary chest compressions and stops for artificial respiration.

Since CPR wasn't formally recognized as a valid method of resuscitating drowning victims until the mid-1700's, if this is too advanced Mads could attempt just some rudimentary and crude method of trying to expel water forcefully from Taines--like pushing on his stomach or flipping him over and slapping him on the back.

Edit: Since Ulric got there first, I'll go over to see if Anwyn is alright.

(Am I right in assuming it's way too narrow for me to get up there and fight with Rodrick? That was the impression I got earlier.)

(OOC: I am assuming the webs are within arm's reach of her. If not, she'll pick up all her stuff and run back to the fountain area.)

Olaf, on full defense now, steps back and back attempting to get enough room between himself and the undead monsters to pause for a round to recover/bind his wounds/etc. Hopefully, Rodrick and Dieter can hold the monsters' attention long enough for Olaf to recover. If he can rest for a round he'll move back up to attack again, perhaps giving one of the others a chance to step back for a round of rest and recovery.
