In the fountain chamber, the light of Taines' and Ulric's lanterns lurch in a frantic dance with the shadows as they melee against the horrible water monster.
(Initiative is rolled; Taines 1d6=2(-1), Victor 1d6=1, Mads 1d6=5(+1), Ulric 1d6=1, Monster 1d6=6)
Mads sees an opportunity almost immediately and slashes again with his antique axe. This time his aim is exquisite (1d20=20!) and he gouges a great furrow through the watery tentacle even as it reforms for another strike (3dd=6,1,1) causing anther 3 hit-points.
"Wee ssslaysss!" threatens the monster in a frightening, almost imperceptable, hiss in the common tongue. It strikes with cobra like speed (1d20=19) at Taines who is caught awkwardly attempting to dislodge his axe from the fountain centerpiece. The monster's aqueous limb (or neck?) slams into the Dwarf's head and upper torso with torential force, immediately extinguishing his lamp. Taines is completely engulfed by the churning water and thrust entirely off the ground -- the poor Dwarf is being being strangled and drowned at the same time! Despite a desperate struggle, Taines cannot avert the unnatural suffocation (save 1d20=11) and is drowned!
Seeing his companion's urgent plight, Victor hews furiously at the trunk of the tentacle (1d20=17) and dashes his morning-star powerfully into the incomprehensible beast for a further (2dd=4,5) 2 hit-points. At this there is a terrible hiss of "Cursssesss youooo!" before the water tentacle -- and the Dwarf -- drop lifeless to the chamber floor with an almighty splash.
Ulric, eyes already afire in preparation to unleash his sorcery, realises at the last moment that the need has passed, and he reverts his course before causing harm to his half soaked fellows...
- Only Ulric's lantern remains lit.
- The monster appears to have been vanquished.
- Taines has 0 hit-points, and will die next round without aid.
