This sort of thing makes Dieter really angry.

He continues the fight, but with even more anger-fueled ferocity.

Wibert takes the right passage nearer to the strange edifice, but there is little light to be had beyond the blue glare in the Second Vault. He has the impression that there is another vault 50 or 60 feet down the dark, narrow passage. Boy, is it ever cold in here!
Drawn to the strange stone edifice (with Wibert still handling his torch he just lit), Wibert decides to dart over and investigate, for any thing that may turn help stop the undead or a secert door to escape by maybe.

Josiane's mantra rings fair and true in the otherwise fell vault. And like a cleansing wave of it causes the dead to stagger and twitch, and to come no closer. But nor do they retreat. In fact they simply pause exactly where they are upon the stair almost as if suspended in time.

Gustave and Highbough hold, but Dorgan takes full advantage of the bizarre delay and puts his trusty axe into the foul thing before him (2dd=6,2) for a staggering 7 hit points, dashing apart its rotten chest cavity and throwing it from the ledge, so that it falls 30ft it darkness and is broken upon the floor below.

This seems to trigger a reaction, and the horrible dead retaliate momentarily (1d20; versus Gustave=4, versus Dorgan=10) but their unsteady claws only ring upon mail and shield. Then they revert to their awkward, jerking stasis...

Meanwhile, Guntram keeps a steady eye upon the black passage behind, down which he can see the yellow glow on the torch light in the ante-chamber. For now it appears all quiet...
