Guntram, Gustave, Josiane, Dorgan & Highbough; The Ante-Chamber
Guntram wedges the sputtering torch in the crook of a stone knight's elbow, and continues to watch while Josiane extracts a bundle of torches from her pack. This done she takes one in each hand and fires them from the lit torch, and suddenly the cold little chamber is awash with dancing yellow torch light, and it is a comfort.
However, it is only short lived, for she lobs a torch down each of the two unexplored passages.
That to the immediate left of the steep stair is narrow, and in-leaning; wide enough only for one abreast. The flame briefly illuminates the tight passage then comes to rest some 30 or 40ft in, a pile of bricks and rubble partially block the way ahead...
The passage ahead is much broader, so that two armed men could walk abreast. Josiane's torch lights the way once again, scuttling up the passage some 40ft again. The group see that the passage is lined by man-sized, shadowy alcove all along its length. The floor is uneven, and cold, and the passage continues on into the dark...
The ante-chamber seems once more dim, and cold.
