Anyway, he takes some time to thoroughly examine the walls and floor of Room #10 before trying to determine what furniture might be available elsewhere in the house to put in it.

He is excited to have a room to call his own, having spent most of the last few months traveling the country and, more recently, running for his life through dungeons.
Desmond is thrilled with room 10; even Mondes is dutifully impressed.

Though it might be "small" compared to other rooms in the manse, it is relatively "enormous" compared to the accommodations Desmond/Mondes has recently been sharing at the Plough and Furrow.

The ceiling must be 10 of 12 feet overhead, giving the room a very spacious air. There are generous windows on two sides, overlooking pleasant gardens, and these can be opened if desired (they are in need of a good clean, however).

The floor is polished timber boards, and the walls are plastered and painted lace-white. There are exposed broad timber beams in the ceiling, and a small fireplace to the left of the door.

The only furniture present is a dusty chamber pot, but Desmond has a feeling he could "make do" with this.

Even Mondes smiles.
Desmond smiles, "Yes, this will do just fine! Now to find some furniture... Might as well check the dungeon. Maybe it was used for storage. And, maybe the missing servants are there, as well! Just in case, though... " He grabs Mads' Cold Iron Axe and heads down to the dungeon. Hopefully, he can find a light source in the kitchen? If not, I guess someone will have to go out and pick some candles or torches up...

Despite his earlier comments regarding the basement, Gustave finds himself unexplainably in the master suites.

"Hmm...", he mumbles to himself, "I suppose it will suffice..."

Already pondering improvements (that Dorgan chap sounded most able) he sidles to the balcony for a well earned cigar in the morning sunshine.

Desmond/Mondes and Highbough dump their packs and excess gear in the rooms they have chosen, and with candle and lantern head down to explore the dungeons beneath the kitchen.

These are accessed via a narrow stone stair that descends from the back of the (considerable) pantry.

It seems to descend quite steeply, one a breast, until a grim, dank ante is attained. It smells damp and unfriendly, and Mondes complains that he'll more than likely catch a chill.

By the flickering lamp light the pair can see three small chambers, one of which is sealed off by a rusty grid of metal bars -- a proper gaol. The other two rooms are little more than 10ft wide and deep, and appear (by the rough shelving and wine racks therein) to have been used for storage.

There is no sign whatever of any servants, nor of any wine in the cobwebbed racks.

doctorx wrote:"Goodness," murmurs Josiane as she takes in the grandeur of her new accomodations. Truth to tell, she feels a little out of place here and this talk of 'servants' makes her rather uncomfortable, although she is sensible enough to keep her opinions to herself.

She will be more than happy to settle into one of the smaller rooms on the first floor (say Room # 12 if no-one else wants it?) and will go promptly in search of a linen cupboard if there are beds needing to be made.

She has studied The Sacrosanct Solliloquy during her morning devotions.
Fortunately for Josiane's sensibilities, there is no sign of any servants.

Less conveniently, however, is the general lack of furniture. Josiane counts six small timber cots about the manse, but though these are of proper construction and craft they lack mattresses. The cupboards in the kitchen, pantries and elsewhere are all likewise bare.

Not too many beds will be made up immediately, she concludes.

He then goes outside and walks the grounds around the house looking for any signs of disturbed earth or other oddities.

By the time everyone has done a quick walk thru of the premises, chosen a room, unloaded their personal belongings, and investigated the surrounds somewhat, it is mid-morning.

Throughout the property the company collectively find a bare minimum amount of furniture for the property to function; six cots, eight mismatched chairs, two foot-stools, a trunk, a smallish table, and so on. Certainly it is not grandly furnished as it appeared to be when Dieter and Olaf briefly visited the place a few days earlier. Mysterious.

Outside, the garden will require some attentions soonish if it is not to be let wild. But fortunately there is at least a modest stock of wood for the fireplaces, and the water heater, and there is a trickle of running water in the kitchen, laundry and wash room taps.

Ulric is just completing his uneventful circuit of the gardens when he hears a clanging at the street gate. He walks briskly over to see a group of some half dozen Goblins at the gate. The three and half foot tall creatures are dressed respectably enough, but they still have pointy noses and ears. Ulric notes a few bald heads and greying hairs, and assumes they must be senior for their kind...

"Misterrr... Offal? Misterrr... Dier?" asks the first of them, reading from a piece of paper through small spectacles.

Highbough admires his goblin torture chamber with delight, devising new experiments to test his understanding of Highbough's Torrefaction.

Satisfied with his plans, he slowly ascends the basement steps...
