Olaf examines the room, including the ceiling before entering, but it is soon clear that he and Victor are the only living things here.

The bold pair enter the stinking room, and poke cautiously through the mess as they ply a route across the "stable yard", if that is indeed what it is. Whatever is was, the ten or so stalls were clearly used to house some kind of animals recently. Carnivorous if the rank blood stains and chunks of carcass lying about are anything to go by. The chains hanging from the rear walls of each stall might have been used to restrain the beasts.

Along one long side of the room are 10 or so stalls. Olaf spies that the chain in the second stall still has a thick, spiked-leather collar still attached to it...

At the far end of the room, some 60ft away is another closed door...

"The Ogres kept something very bad in here." Olaf says quietly, "I want to get through and out of here."

He will listen at the next door, then attempt to open it if it is quite beyond.

There is a sound beyond that might be a deep, steady breathing.

Olaf leans back to Victor and whispers, "Sounds like deep steady breathing inside. Probably something sleeping. I'll try the door, very quietly. If it opens easily...and hopefully soundlessly...we can surprise whoever is in there."

If the door doesn't open easily, and quietly, Olaf won't try to force it. That would alert what/who ever is inside. We'll have to try another route in that case.

Victor gives a curt nod, and grips his hand axe tighter, in readiness.

Then Olaf tries the door knob... the battered, rusty thing turns with a modest creak, and then Olaf gives the door a firm yank with is right hand, holding the lantern in his left. His sword is in its sheath.

The pair grit their teeth as the door gives way with something of a muffled scrape and a low whine...

(1d6)

There is a sudden snort as Olaf pulls at the door and as his lantern light spills into the passage beyond, a large black wolf -- which was apparently sleeping curled up against the door like a lost dog -- leaps to its feet, blinking shaking its head into a rousing growl.

Neither side is surprised (Olaf rolled a 1). What to do?

Olaf will be prepared to attack with his sword if the wolf leaps forward, but he will try to talk to the beast first.

OOC: Low wisdom, perhaps, but Olaf would rather make friends right now that fight...doubtful, but that's his first choice.

"Whoa, fellow! What are you doing locked up in here by yourself?" Olaf's voice is strong, but not threatening, "I bet you're hungry and thirsty..."

"Victor, do we have any water left?" Olaf says, as he tries to keep the wolf a bay without attacking, "If we can make friends with this thing, he can likely show us the way out of here."

OOC: I don't know if I'll get that far, depends on the wolf's reaction. If it does attack, Olaf will step back from the doorway so Victor can join in the fight.

Olaf (charisma 8) attempts a stern but fair hand with the Wolf, which by matter of fact is an enormous brute almost 3ft at the shoulder with thick, pitch black fur, great amber eyes and huge fangs which glisten in the lantern light as it warily swings its head to a fro...

(1d6=... 5!)

Victor looks on in disbelief as the Wolf's guttering growl does not rise to attack crescendo... instead it sniffs and growls and regards the two Men for a long moment, then suddenly turns and bounds into the dark corridor beyond.

"Well I never!" gasps Victor. And spits.

Olaf chuckles to himself and says quitely, "Well, that went better than I thought it would.

"So, do we follow along after the wolf or close the door and try a different direction?" Olaf asks Victor, "I'm not sure there *is* another direction to try..."

OOC: Ways, a map would be helpful here because I'm losing track of where Olaf and Victor are.
