(073) Wind and Sand

The skiff doesn't have any cabins. It is (or was) a 50ft long, 10ft deep, surfboard-shaped platform with one vertical mast and two horizontal masts with a complicated web of hard, narrow fins and rigging between them. The entirety of the hull-space is one large chamber which is dominated by the leaden ovoid, which contained the air-elemental.

Taking a break from watching (easily done, with Dieter and Olaf nearby), Desmond examines the rigging to see if any rope might be salvaged from it. Never know when you might need a good supply of rope...

Olaf looks up at Desmond and shouts over the wind, "WHAT DID THE MAGIC-USERS FIGURE OUT WITH THE MAGIC BALL OF THEIRS?"

Barely hearing Olaf's shout in the din of the howling wind, Desmond slowly shakes his head and shrugs in response, since he'd left the inside of the ship before Dieter. He continues to see if he can extract any useful rope from the rigging...

"Can we be certain of successfully navigating our way to the fortress where Gustave is held in this driving storm?" wonders Josiane; "It would go ill with us to become lost in this maelstrom."
She shifts awkwardly in the confined space and winces. The air creature's blows were fell indeed and she is still suffering from the effects.

Outside, with the wind still lashing about them, Dieter and Olaf keep a squint-eyed watch on the surrounds. Truth is they can't see beyond the crater rim, about 40 yards off, beside which the flying sand makes it near impossible to look toward windward at all...

Meanwhile Desmond/Mondes investigates the possibility of cutting some rope loose; it's all flicking and flapping wildly in the wind, but there's plenty of it that can be salvaged with a good knife.

"I don't think we could get truly lost if we tried," Ulric answers Josiane, "We are trapped within a great ring of fortresses. No matter which way we go, we would only find the curtain wall that stands between them... In any event," he announces, "I believe Gustave is languishing in a prison some four leagues that way." indicating almost directly into the wind.

Seeing as how the ship isn't going to fly again without its elemental, Desmond begins methodically cutting away the rigging, leaving rope in as long of lengths as he can manage. He'd like to gather a few coils of 50' or so of the lighter ropes, if possible, but he'll see what he can get done while the others chat down below. If they're to go anywhere in this maelstrom, they may want to tie everyone off on the same line to ensure nobody gets lost...

Olaf leans over to Dieter and says,"I'm going up to the rim to look around. I'll signal you if I see anything moving out on the plane."
Olaf pulls out a big handkerchief and folds it into a triangle and ties it over his mouth and nose to give some protection from the blowing sand, then walks and crawls up the rim of the crater to the rim. He will keep low, but look over the rim, scanning in all directions.

Some of those wolfmen got away, so it wouldn't surprise if me they are coming back with reinforcements. I think we better keep an eye out.

What does he see?

Dieter follows Olaf with his eyes. He still glances around from time to time, but his main objective is to keep Olaf in sight and be available should there be trouble.
