Torban moves a little further in to the large space, now dimly illuminated, as Guntram takes rear guard and the others inspect the wolf-corpse.

The chamber is shaped like an intersection between two huge boulevards, with the central area raised above the floor. Torban can just about see boarded up windows opposite, about 60ft across the room.

Meanwhile, Ulric has no notion of what the smoldering giant wolf might really have been. He has read of dire wolves, wargs, winter wolves, hell hounds and the like. But he has never knowingly met any first hand, so it's impossible to tell what this thing might have been.

"Err... problem," mutters Guntram, as he sees multiple figures moving in the dark passage behind them. The way back is blocked.

And then all hell breaks loose.

The four black monks rushing at Dieter and Dorgan cast off their tattered robes and leap into battle -- impossibly morphing into wolfmen in mid-air -- stabbing with cruel, long knives and snapping with awful fangs even as they collide violently with the stoic defenders.

(1d20; Dieter=11, 9, misses. Dorgan=1, 6, misses. Two Wolfmen=14,20,18,8, three hits. 3d6=1,2,1)

Our heroes are battered in the onslaught, but they withstand these superficial hurts suffering only 2 hit points each.
