Torban lunges with shield and spear, but can't penetrate the monster's thick black hide with his spear as Gustave is still reeling from the previous onslaught. As he regains his footing and the beast bounds at him again Ulric utters a supernatural phrase and flings his hand as if hurling a javelin... and four fiery lances blister through the air, affronting eyes with their brightness, and singing skin with their impossible heat as the zip past Armando, and Gustave -- momentary illuminating the world -- before piercing the over-sized wolf and bursting through it with a bright orange flame.

The huge wolf drops dead, a burning heap of foul smelling black fur.

"Armando, thank you for your keen instincts." he says before taking a large breath and stooping low to inspect the carcass.

However, he doesn't need his night sight to see that the situation has gone awry. No sooner has he set foot through the library door into the passage than he spies the great, runic door at the far end of the passage has been flung wide open and a troop of black robed men have issued into the passage. Two of them remaining in the doorway with burning torches. Four more move with purpose toward the library -- their faces are hidden by black cowls.

As soon as Dorgan steps out, the Men nearest (60ft) shout "They're in the library!" and lurch into a run.

How does Dorgan react?

Armando and Torban eye the smoldering carcass warily... it has the look of a black but is larger than any wolf either of them have heard of. It's the size of a pony for Thuul's sake! The chest is deep and the legs thick. Its snout is short and powerful -- built like a hyena's -- with an array of three and four inch yellow fangs that look like they'd have no problem taking a Man's arm off. Or even a leg.

Both are silently thankful for Ulric's well timed intervention as Rufus leaps over the body and stabs a dagger into the thing's neck, sawing it bloodily back and forth a few times.

He instead turns to make sure their back is secured. One head will watch the hallway they originally came from while the other alternates between the hall and the library door.
