Neither Franklin nor Wiglaff hear anything behind the doors. Then the party hears a voice from the eastern corridor, where it turns north. An obvious mage stands there, in a neutral stance. "Halt strangers! Go no further without peril! This is our territory."
Franklin says, "Hi Tim, I'm Franklin! Is there a toll to pass safely through your territory? What about west of the statue room; is that your territory, too? Any other dangers we should watch out for?"
"Beyond that far door is fair game for all. We study magic here, and are willing to trade scrolls, magic items and spells. Also, we are currently at war with a pair of wizards to the east. Perhaps we could team up, clear them out, and split the loot?"
"Our master has a niche magic item that they covet, so they are always sending bands of whomever they can dupe to do their dirty work - they dare not risk attacking a large group of wizards themselves. Plus, unlike us, they extort items from any they encounter. Those who refuse, or unable, they blast with fireballs."
