Re: The First Adventure

Dougal stares at Chegs sadly for a long moment after Tet dispatches the last ghoul. Then his look of despair changes to a look of horror and he looks at Willie and asks,"Is... is Tet going to change into one of those?"

Re: The First Adventure

Oowherrr! shudders Tet, as he kicks the dead thing off him. After he has regained a degree of composure Tet mumbles dejectedly: I dunno what finally stopped it, but slowly a thought dawns on him. He gently raises his dagger. Maybe it were.... this?
Fully expecting Cheggs to become a ghoul by the time we pass by here next :)

Re: The First Adventure

At Dougal's words, Willie leaps up from his place beside Cheggs' corpse -- he raises his axe high & looks like he might be on the verge of using it on his former friend! He squints at Cheggs suspiciously for a moment, then when the deceased hobbet doesn't move, he looks to Dougal & Tet.

"It does seem the ones that attacked us were once ... people like us." He looks at the dead creatures sadly, then his look turns thoughtful & determined.

"I suppose we could burn them. Someone tried that before. Or we could toss them down there like you said, Dougal."

He points into the nearby chasm.

"But what if they climb out?"

Turn 29

Potty elucidates, "Ecologically speaking, the chasm provides necessary drainage, otherwise this area would be flooded. The moisture allows life forms to thrive, such as those giant puffballs we passed near the entrance. But it can also be a breeding ground for infectious diseases such as ghoulism."

The mandatory post-combat rest turn passes as our heroes debate their options. All is still and quiet, save for the steady drip, drip, drip from the cavern ceiling into the still water deep below, at the bottom of the crevasse.

Re: The First Adventure

Your DM wasn't sure whether our heroes would survive that fight; nice job! Three 2HD monsters is not necessarily a 'TPK' encounter vs. a 1st level party, but the dice were unkind in rolling double-digit hit points for two out of three ghouls. I was a bit generous in bringing Tet from the brink of death back into the fight so quickly, but given that a) he was dropped to exactly 0hp, and b) Potty was standing by with healing, and c) the ghoul was inches from his face, the stars were in alignment for Tet's hero moment.

Poor Chegs, though. :(

What's the decision?

Re: The First Adventure

Willie examines the corpses nearby.

Do those that rose as ghouls show any signs of having been burned?
I wasn't sure any Hobbets would survive, either!

Am I right in thinking that Cheggs' player is inactive?

Re: The First Adventure

Dougal shrugs,"I think we owe it to Chegs to do whatever we can to make sure he doesn't... doesn't come back as one of those." he points at the again-corpses. "Let's burn him."
Before they do that, Dougal searches the corpses for anything of value. "You never know..."

Re: The First Adventure

We haven't seen Ebon Hearted Soul since February, alas. He's always welcome back to roll up a new character! :)

No disrespect to Chegs, but might this be a good way to use up the expired/less-reliable oil the party scavenged from the abandoned copper-mining room?

Re: The First Adventure

Dougal and Willie search the bodies. 9 of the 12 are burned and hacked apart, as though someone wanted to not just kill them, but over-kill them so they wouldn't rise again. These 9 are clad in rags and carry nothing of value. The other 3 corpses are fresher, and (other than the damage dealt by the party) bear only normal-fatal wounds from biting and scratching.

The 3 fresh ghouls were once well-equipped adventurers. They are wearing leather armor, but not carrying any weapons or shields, and they have lost their backpacks along the way. The coin-purses at their waists are bulging with a combined 300 gold pieces! It is the most treasure our heroes have ever seen in one place, hooray!

Re: The First Adventure

"That's more like it," Dougal says,"Might as well make sure we get anything of value from Chegs, as well, before we burn him."
Dougal searches Chegs' body and upends his pack to spill out the contents. He uses one of the large sacks to hold the 300 gold coins.

"Let's get anything else we might need from his things - torches, food, water... and now we can burn his body."
