(01) The Approach

You left Harvest Town behind almost a week ago now, searching the width and breadth of the North Holdings for signs of this "Strife". At the farming villages of Flax and Plow you were reluctantly hosted by suspicious Speakers, grateful to see your armed party gone. In Terps nervous farmers rumored of folk disappearing; dragons razing villages; and a mission of "True Speakers" of which local Speakers knew nothing. On the rutted track to Polders you encountered refugees heading south. They'd abandoned their huts and fields, fleeing "the Strife" before it was too late. Soon, you found their abandoned village, clearly ransacked. Then, finally, a razed village.

You pushed on, tracking the perpetrators to the very edge of the Langlands. Just a mile back you saw a pair of smoldering pyres; plainsfolk sending their dead--and their enemies-- to the afterlife. A battle then, but over what?

It's now mid afternoon with the autumn season fading. A cool northerly wind pushes darkening clouds toward you and promises an early winter.

In the south and south-east lie the disquiet farmlands you have traversed. North are the undulating grassy realms of the Plainspeople. West is the brooding Nightwood, with all signs indicating your quarry have made toward that gloomy abode...
DL#1 begins with a wilderness crawl that rail-roads players through a series of events and encounters that provide background, have them meet the "quest giver", and then arrive at the adventure locale.

Wyrmspear boils all that down to the synopsis you've just read. Yes, I'm pointing you at the adventure locale for this play test but, ideally, all that could unfold more organically in an actual campaign.

What now?

"I suppose we continue west in pursuit of the perpetrators." muses Flin the dwarf.
Did the refugees give any extra information about their attackers?

Re: (01) The Approach

All, it is really helpful in the play-by-post format to post in third person in the In Character parts of your posts.

This makes it much clearer which PC is doing or saying something when we come back to the forum and read half a dozen posts at a time. Compared to, say, a bunch of posts that all declare "I do something" without saying who "I" is.

You can also put D tags around any Dialog to make it stand out nicely.

If you want to use In Character and Out Of Character in the same post, you can put IC tags around the In Character part of your post, and OC tags around the Out Of Character part of your post. From memory, I think we have to write the IC part first, and OC part second, and have only one of each section in any post.

The refugees were a two-score rabble of anxious farmers, Speakers, a few herd animals, and everything they could get into several carts. They were all too eager to reach Harvest Town as soon as possible, and were not inclined to stop for a chat. They took some pains to avoid your party, giving you a wide berth.

You gathered they hadn't actually been attacked, or seen any enemy, but rather; fled their village as soon as they realised several of the woodsmen had gone missing. Nervous times indeed.

"It may be ill-advised to enter the forest at dusk," says Wraislin toying with the rings woven into his braided goatee, "but equally ill-advised to camp in the open next to such cover. I humbly suggest that we push on", he states without a skerrick of humility.

There is no time to waste, says Thanis. We mush push on. If need be, I can scout for a suitable campsite once the day grows nearer to its end.

Thanis takes point on the expedition.

Re: (01) The Approach

Thanis lopes off toward the woods, his practiced gait soon putting him 50, 60, ... yards ahead of the main party as they debate the wisdom of approaching that brooding treeline...

A minute later, Thanis crests a low rise and begins to make out a clearing, what must have been a logging operation, at the fringe of the wood. Not a 1/4 mile ahead. All seems quiet for now; not a soul to be seen.

Re: (01) The Approach

Goldwen snorts, "Knock it off, Wraist! That's the third time this week you've suggested a course of action wouldn't be advisable and THEN advised we do it! It's so. damn. irritating!"

She frowns as she watches Thanis approach the clearing. "By the gods, I hate this part. I do hope Thanis is being careful."

Re: (01) The Approach

Thanis stays in position, motionless, for a few minutes. If he sees nothing after that time, he retreats until his friends are in view and signals to them that it's safe to approach.

Re: (01) The Approach

Witherun strings his bow, open his quiver, shields his eyes with his hand, and peers after Thanis.

He says nothing, though he snorts & spits upon the ground meditatively.

When Thanis gives the signal he'll move up with the rest, bow in hand & with an arrow ready.
