Re: The Third Adventure

Surprise Round

The 4 tunnel thugs choose random targets: Willie, Dame Simonetta, Noh, and Noh! They are 200 pounds, dense as stone, and reek of creosote.

Willie and Dame Simonetta nimbly dodge their attackers and keep their grip on the rope.

Noh is double-teamed. Two of the tunnel thugs slam into him like linebackers, and he loses his grip on the rope! Their intention is to dash him against the rocks and knock him out of the fight. But thinking quickly, Willie puts out his hand and grabs Noh as he falls past. Noh catches hold of the rope just below Willie, and the two tunnel thugs tumble to the bottom of the gravel slope and land on their feet.

Round 1

It's a chaotic free-for-all, every Hobbet for themselves! The tunnel thugs have failed to dislodge our heroes from their rope, but the situation is dire as the rock-creatures seem completely at home on the 45-degree gravelly slope.

Dougal has a clear shot looking down from the ledge. His best chance at avoiding friendly fire is to snipe at the two tunnel thugs that have tumbled to the bottom of the slope. He fires with accuracy and wounds (but does not kill) one of the creatures. (He will have 2 shots next round because of his 3/2 racial ability.)

Willie makes a one-handed grab of Noh and swings Noh onto the rope below him (in the lowest position). Noh uses his falling momentum to drive his cudgel into his attacker's skull. With a loud crack, the tunnel thug's head splits open, and it crumples lifelessly to the ground. However, the second creature retaliates, and pummels Noh's legs, crunching his shins.

Kiplyn and Tet are blocked from moving to the top or bottom of the rope, so they attack the nearest target. Tet swats harmlessly with his torch, but Kiplyn strikes true and gives the tunnel thug a vicious stab wound.

Dame Simonetta scrambles to the top of the rope and gets both of her feet on solid ground, side by side with Dougal. But her attacker reaches out, grabs her by the ankle, and casts her down the slope! Dame Simonetta falls head over heels, lands at a odd angle, and doesn't get up, oh no! Her lantern shatters and goes out.

At the end of Round 1, one tunnel thug is dead and two are wounded. The healthy one is at the top of the rope, at Dougal's feet, one of the wounded ones is in melee with Kiplyn and Willie, and the other wounded one is below Noh. Tet's torch is the only source of light. Tet and Willie are injured from the previous fight, and Noh has fresh wounds. Dame Simonetta is crumpled at the bottom of the slope. @kipper does she scream or call out anything as she falls?

What next?
Random targets (including possibly Carc; tunnel thugs hate birds!) 4x1d7 = Willie, D.S., Noh, Noh

Uphill slopes are a difficulty 2 climb. This means thieves with rope have automatic success, and non-thieves have 5-in-6 success. However, I will apply -2 penalty for each tunnel thug attacker (so Noh is at -4).

Climbing checks (1d6):
Dame Simonetta 5-2 = 3 success
Willie 6-2 = 4 success
Noh 2-4 = -2 fail, Noh falls!

Noh's save vs. paralysis 1d20=13 just barely!

Do you remember I said I wanted to try individual initiative?
Tunnel Thugs 1, 1, 3, 4
Dame Simonetta 5
Willie 4
Tet 3
Kiplyn 3
Noh 2
Dougal 1 but it doesn't matter

Round 1 (in initiative order)

Dougal goes first (missile attack) 1d20=18 hit for 2hp
Dame Simonetta scrambles to the top of the rope.
Willie catch attempt 1d6 = 6 success!
Noh attackers 2x2d20 = 1, 14, 10, 4, hit once for 1d4+1 = 2hp, dropping Noh to 3/5
Kiplyn dagger 16, hit for 4hp
Tet torch 10 miss; he cannot draw a weapon without letting go of the rope or dropping his torch
Noh cudgel 20 hit for 3hp kill!
Willie attacker 5, 3 miss
Dame Simonetta attacker 6, 19 hit for 4hp dropping her to -1/8!!
Does her lantern go out? 1d20 = 7, it does.

Re: The Third Adventure

Dame Simonetta's scream as she plummets down the slope turns into a liquid gurgle and finally silence as she strikes the ground.

Dougal draws his sword and main gauche and stabs downward towards the creature at his feet, hoping the high ground gives him some advantage.

Once Noh is secure on the rope below, Willie reaches for Chegs' warhammer, at his belt. While holding on to the rope with his left hand, he swings the hammer at the wounded tunnel thug!

Re: The Third Adventure

Halloween Special Episode

Dame Simonetta sees a light, and she floats toward it. There was something she was right in the middle of, but now it seems like a forgotten dream. As she approaches the pearly gates, her heart leaps with joy to see a familiar face: Her beloved Snooky!

But what is wrong? Instead of recognition, Dame Simonetta sees revulsion in dear Snooky's eyes! "What's wrong, Snooky? It's me, Simonetta," she tries to say, but the words won't come. Dame Simonetta touches her larynx to figure out what is wrong with her voice, but she feels only the vertebrae of her neck. She tries to touch her lips, but feels only teeth and her bony jaw. Horrified, she holds her hand up in front of her face, and sees only a bony skeleton's hand!

Snooky cowers in the shadow of the Bone Woman and urinates in terror. The pearly gate begins to creak shut with a metallic grinding sound and nobody visibly operating it. The sun moves through the sky with accelerating speed, and the afternoon shadows are lengthening to evening with each passing second. A chill wind makes the fallen leaves dance around Dame Simonetta's bony feet.

What does she do?

Re: The Third Adventure

Tunnel Thug Battle Round 2

In attacking the late, great Dame, the tunnel thug has left its back unprotected. Dougal draws his sword and stabs with perfect accuracy! The tunnel thug rolls down the slope and shatters into gravel. Dame Simonetta is avenged!

Meanwhile the Ghost of Chegs returns to aid our Heroes! With supernaturally convenient timing, a knot of pine pitch in Tet's torch explodes in a sudden cloud of sparks, singeing the tunnel thug's shrimp whiskers and distracting it long enough for Willie and Kiplyn to make their attacks. Kiplyn's dagger glances off the stony carapace, but with a mighty blow of Chegs' Hammer Willie crushes the tunnel thug to dust!

The last surviving tunnel thug is at the bottom of the rope, grabbing at Noh's ankles. Noh rains down harmless cudgel blows against its rocky noggin.

Round 3

Before anyone else can move into position, Noh finishes off the last opponent with a precision cudgel strike to the top of its head! In its death throes, it smashes into Noh's leg, badly spraining his knee.

The four tunnel thugs are defeated, their bodies lifeless shards of stone. Tet's torch spits and smokes with pine pitch and casts dancing shadows over the fallen Dame Simonetta Clytie LaJolle. The raven familiar Carc circles over the battlefield with a mournful nevermore.

On this All Hallowed Evening, the veil is lifted between Life and Death, and Ghosts and Spirits walk among us. A mystical energy hangs in the air, dank with potential. What is Thy bidding, Mortals?
Round 2 same initiative order:
Willie hammer 19 hit for 4hp, share kill w/ Tet!
Tet torch 19 hit for 2hp, share kill w/ Willie!
Kiplyn dagger 3 miss
Tunnel Thug vs Noh 8, 10 miss
Noh cudgel 15 miss
Dougal sword 20!! hit for 6hp kill!
Tunnel Thug DEAD
Tunnel Thug DEAD

Round 3
Tunnel thug 3, 18 hit for 2hp dropping Noh to 1/5
Noh 20 hit for 5hp kill!
Tunnel Thug DEAD

Kiplyn puts his dagger away and quickly descends to the bottom. He carefully tries to help Dame Simonetta "Can you hear me, oh please don't be dead, that's not the kind of ending you deserved"

Re: The Third Adventure

Noh limps over on his swollen knee and painfully crouches down to examine Dame Simonetta. He moves her into a dignified pose with arms folded across her chest, places a sprig of mistletoe in her hand, and sheds a tear. He shakes his head sadly. "Her soul has crossed the river. She is faintly breathing, but the light has gone out of her eyes. This shell that was her body is an hourglass is running out of sand. A more powerful Druid would know what to do, perhaps. I wish I'd paid more attention in Healing class. I played hooky from school that day to explore the forest with my pet lizard Spot."
I'll rule that, as a 1st-level Druid, Noh has a 1-in-6 chance to miraculously revive Dame Simonetta. He rolls 1d6=5, failure.

Noh's Mythos score is zero. If he had MYTH > 0 then he could put his sanity on the line to find a non-Druidic solution.

As a non-Druid, Kiplyn has a base 0-in-6 chance to revive Dame Simonetta with healing magic.
And with MYTH = 0 he has a base 0-in-6 chance to help Dame Simonetta non-Druidically.

Can you talk me into giving you a bonus to either of those rolls? Is there anything Kiplyn is willing to sacrifice or gamble, for example? The standard rules are malleable on Halloween.
