Wibert capers about in the semi-dark, searching for a dummy-head to spike upon his sword... there is nothing immediately useful for the purpose to hand, so he tip-toes a little further down the passage (to the left of the stair) where he sees a few corpses lying about...

Meanwhile, Highbough digs in his pack for the bundles of candles in order to pass them out to his fellows so that they might have a little more light.

...and then...

Those lowest on the stair hear something at the same moment they feel a sudden rush of air.

Target (1-2 Pelenwin, 3-4 Boris, 5-6 Victor; 1d6=3)

Pelenwin and Victor are thrown aside like nine-pins as a something squeal-snorting and bull-solid (1d20=16) smashes into Boris hard, taking him violently at the neck and tearing furiously into him as he collapses suffering (4dd=6,6,5,3) a terrible 14 hit points.

There is a sickening crunch of bone and gristle, the sound of gore splattering on stone, and then a great clatter of spilling coins and clanging mail as Boris is smashed into the wall, dropping his sack of loot.

By the time those on the lower stair grasp they are under attack and turn to see Victor and Pelenwin scrambling to their feet, there is a great, fresh blood stain on the ground and Boris's boots are vanishing from sight around the corner... leaving a thick glistening blood smear behind them.

"Baal's Filthy Hole!" swears Victor, scrambling up the stair as he regains his feet.

"Some light!" yells Pelenwin, pulling his helm back off his face "I see not a dam nable thing!"

Boris is gone.

Up top Wibert curses silently under his breath. Don't those fools on the stair realise he is trying to be sneaky?

Dieter has his sword drawn, but is too far up to help those at the bottom and not far enough up to set off any traps above.

It's the kind of awkward position he's learned to both hate and tolerate at the same time.
