Nay. The Resplendent Scepter is the care of the Sisters of Mercy.

"Right then", says Gustave, with a sigh.

Having appraised the situation, and being none-too-encouraged by his assessment, he begins the labourious task of re-fitting his armour.

The company move cautiously forward, gingerly inspecting the boxes, and the dried phlegm on the walls and floors, which crunches underfoot in places.

Ulric prises some of the stuff from the wall with his dagger. The outer surface of the stuff is hard and brittle, but inside it is still a thick, sticky mucus which draws out to a long thread, much like honey as he pulls the blade away.

There is no telling exactly what it is... but it is very likely an animal or plant excretion of some kind. It seems organic. Not only this, it seems thicker around some cracks and tunnels into the walls than others; these are mostly about a foot or so wide, possibly being the burrows of some tunneling critter.

There are no stairs down; only the gaping open hole in the ground at the rear of the cellar. It is perhaps 20ft around, with the edges of it being purposefully paved. There is a rotted wooden ladder clinging to the near edge via which a descent might be possible...

Desmond cautiously approaches the nearest crate and first examines the outside for any markings.

If he sees nothing, he'll pull out a dagger and prod at the crate to see if anything happens. Then, if nothing does, he'll determine the easiest way to open it and, confirming first that everyone agrees, he'll open it to see what is inside.

Desmond examines the nearest crate; being 30ft or so into the cellar itself. The box itself is old and stained by time, use, and possible reuse. There are no sensible marking on the old create... except perhaps a very faded symbol that might have been branded into the timber decades ago. It looks like nothing so much as... a full-faced helm?

Poking the crate with a dagger produces no reaction whatever.

Ulric leaves the crusty, slimy wall and moves ahead to join Desmond and to illuminate the crates.

"Let's get some strong folks up here to see what is inside this one," he says pointing to Desmond's crate. "But keep watch on the walls and ceiling for that centipede. Those small holes appear to be burrows of some sort. If it pokes it's head out, be ready to chop it off. I'll keep watch on the hole in the floor."

Olaf stands ready to defend his fellow explorers. He is none to happy with all the holes around the cellar, as there could be a bunch of these caterpillars the others mentioned...and that big hole looks like it was man made, not burrowed out by a creature to him. He's not going done it on that rickety ladder though.

Josiane draws her sword and watches the walls and ceiling as Ulric requested. She moves to stand closer to Dorgan, glad to have the presence of her sturdy dwarven companion with her in this new descent into peril.

"What say you to our latest hole, my friend?" she whispers to him; "And know you of any beast that could produce yon odious slime? Though this foe may at least be living, I cannot say I have any great desire to meet with it..."

Highbough rolls his eyes at his companions move to open the crates. "Have we learned nothing? Kill monsters and THEN take their stuff, not the other way around..." he mutters sarcastically under his breath. He starts counting the holes to estimate how many of the centipedes can attack us at once.
