Initiative is rolled (1d6; Desmond=1(+1), Wibert=1(+1), Gustave=2, Koch=6, the Foe=4)

Koch sees Mads fall and finds a renewed aggression for the vile foe boiling up within him and smashes his way into them recklessly (1d20=17) cracking the foul executioner across its bloody jaw with his hammer for (1dd=5) 5 hit points.

The monster's laugh turns to a squeal as it is torn apart by a rising torrent of cinders and flames -- which (1d20=11) Koch isn't quick enough to avoid and suffers (1dd=3) 3 hit points before the fire is sucked away into nothingness a moment after it appeared leaving only an echo of the monster's scream.

Those hideous fiends that remain attack Wibert, Desmond and Gustave (3d20=11,17,18) and both Desmond and Gustave are scored by vicious talons for (1dd=5, 1dd=1) 5 and 1 hit points respectively, and Desmond's wound is grievous. The small fighter is gouged deeply across the chest and thrown down to the floor by the force of the blow. He does not rise again.

Boris and Highbough arrive not a moment too late, taking the battle up to the ghastly monster before it can devour the fallen Halfling entirely. Wibert and Gustave drive home their own attacks too in a sudden finale of flashing blades! (1d20; Wibert=1, Gustave=17, Boris=6, Highbough=20!)

Wibert and Boris distract the foe without telling blows, but Highbough's strike is a precise execution of the art form. His sword flashes in a lightning arc (3dd=4,2,4) for 8 hit points, decapitating the demon that struck down Desmond! Its ugly head sails off upon a shooting a gout of firework sparks as the entire fiend is consumed in a flash of fire (but no-one else is harmed on a hit roll of 20).

Simultaneously The Gustave -- now covered in manifold cuts, scratches, tears and burns -- feints to the left, then darts right and stabs his well-tested blade directly into the monster's detestable face for (2dd=5,3) 6 hit points. His steel punches right out the back of its skull, choking off its rancid squeal as it bursts into char and fire (1d20=8) that consumes Gustave (1dd=2) for another 2 hit points! His sword falls with a clatter to the ground and then Gustave drops to his knees, and then flops on his back completely exhausted.

One fiend remains, cackling awfully to itself as it measures up those still arrayed against it... Wibert, Boris and Highbough, all closing with lethal intent.

The creature is already punctured by Sigmund's dagger in Wibert's hand... but it cares not.

"Hhhhhhell awaaaaaaaits," it hisses in a scorching tongue and cackles to itself with self assurance. "Weeehhyll seeeee you soooooon!"

Highbough can't believe it; he lives yet?

He rushes to help the wounded, being careful not to step on any floor-runes.

As he pops the stopper from his flask Ulric observes the statues that seemed to fall away into blackness emerge again from the shadowy alcoves from whence the demon-spawn came. With a grinding thud they shudder into place, pushing a final gout of ash-heavy smoke ahead of them.

Desmond's eyes roll into the back of his head. Whether it is from the pain of burning claw marks raked across his body or the pain of hearing more of Gustave's theatrics, it is hard to tell.

Before completely passing out, Desmond's thoughts wander to the idea that his fate somehow appears to be tied to Gustave's, so he hopes that his new friend soon becomes rich...

A 6th (and presumably, final) round of combat ensues!

Boris stoutly takes the fight to the last monster, with his mace raised high, as Koch comes at it from behind. Wibert and Highbough hold back, not wanting any part of the monster's fire-burst.

Initiative is rolled (1d6; Boris=1, Koch=5, The Foe=4).

Boris gets its attention first, allowing Koch to close at his leisure (1d20=20!) and he takes full advantage of his position! His hammer falls atop its unsuspecting noggin with a sharp crack, dealing (2dd=2,6) 6 hit points! It is enough to see the wounded fiend off, and it erupts into yet another burst of sparks and ash, its final squeal more of an evil laugh that echoes for a moment in the gritty, ash chocked chamber...

Then all is quiet.
