Ulric; The Front Gate

"I am Master Ulric," he says. "I have also taken up residence here and you would be working for me as well. Have you any letters of reference? Did you work at this house before we moved in or elsewhere?"

"Masterrrr.... Ulric, is it?" says Bennug, glancing over his papers again patiently.

"No Ulric here, I'm afraid, Sir," he laments. "Perhaps Master Offal or Master Dier could establish your identity as Master of these premeseez, good Sir?"

"Until then, I'm afraid I can only report to either Master Offal or Master Dier themselves. Them that signed the contract, Sir, as I'm sure you can appreciate. "

He coughs politely, and shuffles his butlering stance somewhat.

"As for our own credentials, Sir, we are employed by the Traders' Concourse, of course. We haven't worked at this particular estate, but as you'll appreciate Sir, running one house hold is much like running another,"

"Stonework, my friend. If ya want ta know the story of a structure, ask the stones. So I walked around, asking questions, if ya get my meaning."

Not wanting to put all of his newly-found experience to waste, Desmond keeps all of his ears and eyes alert as they descend the stairs.

He finds reassurance in the grip of Mads' Cold Iron Axe (owning to the superstition that iron wards off evil spirits and that he's holding a large piece of iron which happens to have a keen edge on it).

Josiane comes wandering downstairs, looking to enquire as tactfully as she may about the largely unfurnished state of their new accomodations only to see a narrow dark passageway now in evidence beside the fireplace and her friend Dorgan disappearing within, the forbidding Highbough and the befuddling Desmond/Mondes close behind him.

"I rather doubt that's a linen cupboard," she murmurs to herself quietly before hurrying off to fetch her sword and shield and following after the intrepid explorers, informing any other party members she encounters of Dorgan's discovery.

Seeing Josiane disappear into the fireplace behind Dorgan and company, while Ulric continues to banter with a small band of aged goblins, Gustave's indecision is solved.

He follows suit, quickly donning the remaining portions of his battle garb (pausing only briefly to admire once again how resplendent he looks), and follows the group down the narrow stair.

Ulric looks annoyed.

"Well then, if you would be so good as to wait here I will go and send Dieter and Olaf out to greet you while I attend to my own matters."

Ulric turns and heads back to the house to find the pair of fighting men.

Dieter is in his room, arranging his stuff (there's not much furniture, but hey even a bedroll is good when you're out of the wind and rain...) when Ulric finds him. His eyes light up at the idea of servants, but dim noticeably when he finds out that they're not human.

"Leave this to me," he says confidently.

Dieter marches down to the foyer where the assembled goblins await.

"Master Offal?" the butler inqures, hopefully. "Or possibly Master Dier?"

Dieter slaps him on the head. Hard.

"Learn to read!" he roars, right in the little g o b s h i t e's face. "That's Olaf, not offal! And he's a far better man than you'll ever be!

"And my name is Dieter! Not Dier! Learn it! Or your tenure here will be even shorter than you are!"

Then he stands back and surveys his intimidation results.

(If the little g o b s h i t e cowers appropriately and starts pronouncing names correctly, then we'll get along fine. If not, if he persists with this Offal and Dier business, he'll get another slap atop his head. Dieter, Ogreslayer, is in no mood to put up with such insolence.)

Dieter & Company; the Foyer

Bennug the elderly butler staggers back under Dieter's stout blow. When Dieter is done shouting, he slowly, sorely flexes his neck and returns to a respectable posture, withdraws a kerchief from his waistcoat pocket and dabs the bloodly drool away from the corner of his mouth before replying.

"Master DIETER," he says quiet calmly, pronouncing the name with care, "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Sir,"

The remainder of the staff, are suitably impressed with Dieter's temper, endeavoring to not be noticed by their iron-fisted new master...

Dorgan, Highbough and Desmond/Mondes; the Secret Stair

Josiane and Gustave both note what is going on in the ball room, and trundle back upstairs to fetch their gear. Gustave, in particular, will need a few extra minutes to don his mail...

Dorgan, Highbough and Desmond/Mondes, please go to the next thread.
