The Elf has an idea: he spreads some lamp oil on the blades of his battle axe (so the webs won't stick) and takes a swipe at the webbed corridor to try & clear a wider path.

If the oiled battle axe works to clear some webs Grampus will oil his sword and assist in web removal.

No idea!

You definitely lubricate saw blades, drills, etc. I think it is mostly for blade health, but I think it also helps to keep cut material (e.g. sawdust) from adhering to the blade & building up. Whether it actually helps the blade to cut, I don't know.

Wiglaff's primary intent is to make the cutting easier on himself, so he doesn't end up with his axe stuck & have to continually wrench it free.

Grampus decides to take his magic sword and see if the magic alone will keep the web from sticking and swipes through a section of web at the entrance.

I like rewarding good, plausible ideas, so let's say that the magic sword and oiled sword ideas work. You methodically clear the webs from the passage, which goes 20 feet from the door, then widens out into a 20 x 30 chamber, half filled with webs, 20 feet n/s, expanding to the south. There is a door on the east wall at the southern part

If they want to keep clearing the webs away, Rhod will stand watch with his bow up and arrow at the ready, in case these webs are inhabited. This will be in the 20 x 30 bit, where he'll have a clear field of fire; I'm not firing into melee.

His magic sword is sheathed; his old sword wrapped in a large sack and stowed in his pack.

"You guys should clear the webs in the room, too," Aldbane says. If that is done he'll listen at the SE door, keeping watch in the hallway in the meantime.

Nothing is heard beyond the door. The room gets sufficiently cleared of webs to be confident that no hidden surprises await
