Wibert and Olaf both fire another shot to their maximum range, shooting for the Captain and his riders (1d20; Wibert=16, Olaf=1), and Wibert somehow manages another impossible shot, but one of the riders sacrifices his shield to protect his Captain from further harm -- it's timbers split right down the middle by Wibert's arrow. Olaf's arrow has a warped shaft, and it wobbles awkwardly through the air, falling a long way short.

Alas, there are no other targets near enough to drop a rock on -- and even throwing a knife at a sleeping target would be largely ineffectual at this range. Better to get down among them.

Is there any gap through the gate/portcullis for a man to crawl through? Dieter would very much like to get out there and put an end to as many hobgoblins as he can...

(He's specifically looking to climb through/over, at this point.)

The portcullis is all a mess, but there doesn't look to be a space through it. However, Dieter could attempt to bend the portcullis bars to create a gap big enough to wriggle through...

Or, could he not employ The Ring of Gambado to leap over the gate wall...?

Really hoping to keep that one a secret from the hobbos...

Dieter will attempt to bend the bars of the portcullis to get out there and slay some sleeping hobgoblins.

Dieter shoves his way up to the ramshackle grid of the portcullis and grasps two of its rusted bars in his thick paws. The iron may be old and warped with stresses, but the bars are still over an inch thick!

The huge Man tests his thews against the iron, gauging its strength against his own... and then, when all is ready, he exerts the full measure of his physical might -- straining every sinew across his bulging arms, chest and back...

(1d6=5)

Ulric, Gustave, Victor and Pelenwin look on in amazement as the bars slowly creak apart, inch by inch, as Dieter strains mightily, and at last gives a bestial raw as he pushes himself to the utter limit!

Two bars have each yielded some 4 or 5 inches in opposite directions, leaving a gap rough 1ft wide -- just large enough for a Man to squeeze through with some effort.

As tempting as the thought of slaughtering helpless Hobgoblins, Highbough decides to stay on the battlement and keep watch. Hobgoblins are a persistent bunch, and he doesn't like the looks of those wolf riders!

On the Battlement

Indeed, Highbough's wisdom pays off almost immediately, for once the hobgoblins have retreated beyond bowshot, they flee no farther.

Instead, they turn about, and under harsh commands of their Captain they set their shields into a make-shift wall in the earth and then take up watch from behind its protection.

One of the wolf-riders takes specific instructions from his Captain before bolting off into the canyon-lands at great speed...
