"Nothing so sinister as collecting taxes, Master Torben!" replies Desmond, looking behind him over his left shoulder. He does not turn his head back, counting on Mondes to make sure they don't step in Highbough's overturned cow pie. "We're only retrieving some property of the Sisters of... er... the Sisters of... well, of some nuns. One of which Gustave there had a hankerin' for, if I remember properly," he adds with a grin.

"No, my dear two-nogginned half-pint, you have it wrong - I do not have a 'hankering' for one of them as you so callously suggest...", replies Gustave, casting a mirthful eye at Desmond/Mondes, "...the more the merrier I say ha haa!", he finishes, glad that Josiane is far ahead.

Scouting Ahead
(Olaf and Josiane)

Our pair of reconnoiters move at a steady lope and work their way to some hundred yards or so ahead of the main column, and aim ever for what little higher ground there is in order to get a good look about.

Back (over their shoulders) they can see the body of the company as little figures the size of their thumbs. Ket is a shadow of grubby stone walls and roof thatch surrounded by the hazy blur of smoke rising from chimneys and cook-fires. The road winds its way from Ket through the patchwork of fields out the the lands ahead of our pair.

It seems strangely unoccupied -- apparently there is precious little traffic coming into or out of Ket lately.

"I think the Snorks are trying to squeeze the life out of Ket." Olaf says as he continures to scan the area, "A pair of merchants were complaining about that.in the tavern yesterday. Keep.the caravans away and the town will dry up and blow away. Drive out everybody not their own kind."

"MORE is not necessarily 'merrier'," Desmond replies, without missing a beat. He turns to face forward, smirking.

"That's fer sure!" agrees Mondes, and hocks a vile ball of phlegm to the side of the road.

"Hey!" shouts Dorgan. "Easy on tax collectors! I used ta be one."

Mumbling under his breath, he continues, "They called me 'sinister' 'cause I was left-handed, wasn't trying ta scare nobody..."

Rufus realises that he is utterly famished. It is dawn now... which must mean it has been an entire evening and a night since he took up the fool's errand under the concourse.

And that makes it breakfast time! Oh for one of those fine pans of eggs and sausages that Wibert used to cook up!

(OOC: Rufus has enough XP to make 2nd level. All he needs is a full night's bed rest, at an inn for example).

"Perhaps," replies Josiane cautiously; "Or perhaps the Goblins - " she puts a slight emphasis on the word - "believe total economic control will render the population subservient to their will. If indeed Goblins are at the heart of this whole black business. I have my doubts."

She looks out over the empty lands ahead, her grey eyes searching for signs and portends in the light of the early morn.
