Desmond/Mondes and Wen being their examination of the dais and the ramp. Both are constructed of the same, rough hewn rock as the whole of this subterranean part of the abbey; it seem ancient, primitive work. The stones are grey-brown and rounded with age more than craft. The are cobbled with hardened earth rather than mortar; there are finger-width gaps between the stones. However, there is no sign that part of the dais or the ramp might be movable. If anything, they appear resoundingly immovable.

Olaf is keeping a rear guard, and he spies Highbough and then Armando as they approach and then arrive.

Highbough raises an eyebrow as he realises it is that other nameless man that has followed after him. Oh well, one human is much the same as another...

He'll hold it up, point it at the wall, concentrate on it. If it gives him anything, great; if not, oh well.

(It may still have something to say, but only in the right situation.)

"And what is it we have here?" mutters Highbough. He inspects the ancient Elvish runes with great interest.

waysoftheearth wrote: Meanwhile Demond/Mondes moves aside to examine the pictograms carved into the walls. These seem to depict various sorts of wolves and wolf-men. Some of them are, in fact, larger and even more monstrous and diabolical than what would technically be termed "wolves" but this could easily be artistic license. One panel has a circle in the middle of it--to the left hand side of it the panel is night, to the right hand side of it the panel is day. On both sides there are wolf-man with standing with their backs to the circle and something--perhaps a stick or a sword?--held upright in front of them.
After examining the ramp and being totally confused as to why the dust on it is not disturbed, he returns to the pictograms carved into the walls.

"What do you suppose this one means..." he looks around the room to see who all is present and notes the aged elf has joined them, "Highbough? It's the only one that seems like it might reference that ring up on the dais. But I've no idea what it means or if it's even helpful."

"If we can't figure this thing out soon, I say we finish exploring the abbey - starting with that lower level - and see if we can't sniff out that Nizzib creature and get him out of the way, while we're at it."

Highbough has arrived and studies the artifact with great interest. "Someone bring light closer, yes... these markings on the inner ring are ancient star-runes, used by my people to mark the passage of cosmic seasons. Perhaps the portal can only be used at certain times when the constellations are aligned just so. Or... Wen, do you see how there are two rings, a ring within a ring? Perhaps it is a combination-puzzle, and the rings must be rotated to the correct position to arrive at the correct destination. Now, these runes on the outer ring are interesting, I am trying to remember if I've ever seen anything like them before..."

The old Elf sniffs the air. "By the way, does anyone notice that queer smell? It almost reminds me of..." (OOC: What does it remind him of? Did he smell anything smiliar at Hezmog?)

"Well met." Olaf says then adds to Highbough, "Did you make it to the top of the bell tower?"

"I did ascend the tower, Olaf," (Highbough remembers his name at least!) "All around was peaceful as far as these ancient eyes could see."

"That is good to hear, old one." Olaf nods, "At least, we don't have to worry about attack from the outside. Now if only we can deal with the evil that is still inside these walls we should be able to get a little rest."

Olaf goes back to watching for threats, but does keep an eye on what the others are doing...he doesn't trust that those rings aren't going to do something, and if they do, it won't be a good something.
