The First Vault
Now the last pair of walking corpses are caught between Olaf and Gustave, though they scarcely notice their plight.
Initiative is rolled! (1d6; Olaf=1, 1, Gustave=3, Foe=6) and it is the enemy who come crashing down upon Olaf as he makes way for Dieter to retreat behind his shield into the narrow passage.
(2d20=19, 20!) and they come on with a blatant ferocity, crashing upon young Olaf like anchors tossed from a ship! (2dd=4,3, and 1dd=5) Olaf's shield is immediately ripped apart under the battery (I'll assume he blocks the 5 hit point blow) and he suffers another 4 hit point hurt. But then, for a blessing, Gustave attacks from behind them (1d20=3) but his blade is turned aside by rock hard skull. No matter, for at least it gives Olaf the moment he needs to launch into his own counter attack (2d20=17,11) and he slashes and stabs fiercely, hitting both the enemy for (2dd=3,6 and 3,2) 8 and 5 hit points, chopping one down, and dismembering the other.
At the last Highbough comes up the stair after Gustave like a wraith in his billowing dark cloak and thrust the Ire Spear (1d20=20!) through the back of the last standing corpse, so that a foot of the steel point bursts entirely through its chest, and it is suspended for a moment, twitching and quivering, before collapsing in a ghastly heap of dusty, flaky, dried flesh and bone.
And there is a moment of quiet... all that can be heard is the heavy breathing of the fighting Men regaining their spent breath.
It is dark and cold.
