Is there anywhere safe to use oil and burn it? Without hurting those in it?

Nodding to Carc to fly up and keep watch, Noh opens a flask of oil and prepares to toss it in the well. "If it tries to escape I'll douse it with oil and we'll see if it burns," he goes to grab one of the lit torches as well.
Don't want gelatinous "eating" the oil, otherwise I'd throw it now

Oh I don't know about that. Willie is a pretty tough customer, and Robur has that "beginner's luck" aura. I'm an optimist!
If you are looking for an official DM's ruling: I rule that any "overkill" damage would definitely pass through to the victims. For example if the gelatinous cube has 4hp and you inflict 6hp fire damage, then Willie and Robur would take the excess 2hp. Does that sound fair?

depends on if you beleve the cube can absorb more of the attack vs the two stuck. Maybe do 1 hp to each character split the difference, if you are feeling devious
