If they should find none, they will open the door.

Josiane rolls her eyes, recalls the holy teachings set out in the Lesson of Saint Winifred's Right Hook unto the Lecherous, and makes ready to face whatever may lie beyond the door...

While Desmond/Mondes inspects the door for any tomfoolery, the company divides into two groups;
Josiane, Desmond/Mondes, Dorgan, Dieter and Wen remain in the passage by the door (and stair down), while Torban, Rufus and Gustave fall back to join Ulric, Guntram and Armando in the lobby.

At The Door/Stair
(Josiane, Desmond/Mondes, Dorgan, Dieter and Wen)
By the light of Wen's dancing candle flames, Desmond/Mondes concludes that the door is safe, and turns the handle with no ill effect, and so pushes it open.
The door swings inward to reveal a somewhat wider passageway that continues straight ahead. Wen's candle flames dash about to reveal there is another door on the left hand side about half way along, and a more elaborate double door at the far end, 60ft in, which is slightly raised above the ground level; two broad steps lead up to it.

The van guard gather in the lobby by Ulric's lantern light.

"Right then", declares Gustave, swinging his elbows in the relative roominess of the lobby.
"Lets see what's up then shall we", he adds, drawing his blade for emphasis and aiming himself at the west passage.
"If you would be so kind as to lead us Armando? You appear as one light on his feet, unlike...", he leaves the sentence unfinished, only raising a mailed boot and frowning.

"Forward," breathes
Josiane; "Carefully."
She lets
Desmond/Mondes lead the way, trusting to those two wily heads to check for traps, but she does not wish to advance beyond the left hand door. Yet.
Does her convent-raised memory give her cause to think the double door will lead to the chapel?
And is this corridor wide enough for more than one abreast?

Desmond/Mondes stops at the door on the left-hand wall. Desmond again removes his helm to listen at the door. Hopefully with better results this time, now that their numbers are reduced.
Once he is done listening, he will examine it for traps, as well as note which way the door swings, if the hinges are oiled or rusty (if that is possible to see), if the wood around the handle is worn or darker from use than the surrounding wood).
