If not, Dieter will aid his considerable strength with his not inconsiderable crowbar, attempting to pry the sucker open.

"Merovingian you say," Ulric says as Highbough mutters over the strange glyphs. "I am familiar with their script."

Ulric moves forward to decipher the writing. If need be he will speak the words of The Effable Apperception.

OOC: Ways, I'm not sure if we need to roll each time we encounter writing or if once is enough for each language. From Life in the Fast Lane (33):

There is another, far more complicated (4th level) spell therein, which Ulric leave aside for another day. He instead tackles the first of Flewellen's scrolls, which is penned in Merovingian, another tongue (1d6=4) which Ulric is familiar with.

"Er, you won't be moving that by strength alone, nor with your good looks - it's barred on the inside, like," Guntrum declaims, looking over the gargoyle switch for any changes from last time or traps, "I'll just pull this lever here when you're ready, and you should be able to shift it then."

He turns to Josiane, "Erm, if you'd please, m'lady, I'd be much obliged for a morsel of that garlic root you've got there."

He then stands ready to unbar the door, assuming there has been no change in the gargoyle from the last visit; following the opening of the door, he takes his place in the battle order where his betters warrant he's required.

"Well, didn't you go in here earlier?" Olaf asks Josianne, "So, how did you open the door?"

Highbough sayeth: "Some new-fangled script of Man; all yours, Ulric."

He cranes his stiff neck upwards and scans the treeline/roofline of the cemetery. He is looking for a good lookout spot with a view of the entrance(s) and the approaching avenue.

"Did someone say something about grave robbers? We should post a lookout on the roof so that we know if anyone is coming."

Once is enough. Ulric is familiar with the script of the Merovingians. These graven runes upon the door are an older form, the their meaning is clear to him.

The runes read:

"Here do rest the sons of Gottfried and their most faithful Knights"

Guntram locates the mechanism of the turning gargoyle once more, and with a minor effort, pulls the stone beast down; the lever dislodging the lock of the door with an audible thunk.

With the way unbarred, Dieter is then able to push the heavy stone door aside without the use of his crowbar...

Inside is a cool, dark, and musty crypt.

It is apparent that a steep stair immediately descends unto further depths...
