Kiplyn watches the debate over the chest, then decided to look for likely place to hide/ambush while this plays out.

Burglin' Time

OOC: Your DM likes to roll thief skill checks secretly. So if you don't find a trap, you don't know if it's because you failed your check, or there really is no trap.

Kiplyn melts into the shadows.

Robur tests the floor with his cudgel. He is quite confident the floor is safe, no pit traps, trip wires, etc.

Beppo walks around the chest, viewing it from all sides. He doesn't see any traps, nor anything attaching the chest to the floor. He tries to push the chest and manages to slide it about 1 inch across the floor. He's just not strong enough to tip it over by himself.

The chest is pretty big; about twice the size of a Hobbet. The DM rules that tipping the chest over will require an Open Doors check. Beppo rolls 1d6=1. D'oh!

Bilfur stows his new walking stick and asks, " here let me give you a hand you take one side and I will take the other."

With Dame S watching the onward passage, Willie takes up a station watching the passage backward, to make sure nothing sneaks up on them while the chest is checked.

Robur, Bilfur, and Beppo working together are able to flip the chest. (Open doors reroll 1d6=6 +2 for the helpers = 8, easy success)

The metal latch jiggles, but does not pop open in the process. The lid of the chest remains shut.

Our heroes can see, the bottom of the chest is rotted from sitting on the damp cavern floor. It should be easy enough to crack the soft wood with a hammer or crowbar.

Roll to see if the sound from the chest tipping over attracts any unwanted attention. 1d6=2. With three people working together, the party was careful tipping the chest and didn't make too much noise.

"Great!" says Robur. "Maybe one of you has a tool to get through that soft moldy wood in the bottom?"

Beppo scowled and drew his dagger instead. "The best I can do with the tools at hand is try to scrape the rotten wood away with my dagger, though it will surely take time and dull the blade. If it is full of treasure, though, then surely it is worth the effort and I will be compensated easily..."

Robur shrugs and tries going at it with his cudgel to help.

Bilfur asks, " when I have been in town I saw some humans use this tool to open barrels and casks that were stuck. They call this a crowbar. Would this not help, I don't carry one."
