Ulric's marble looks to be a scuffed, chipped and grubby specimen commonly used as a child's toy.

There is no key hole on the manacles... or any fissure at all. The metal seems completely whole and sound as though it forged in one whole piece around the prisoner's ankle!

Thus, Ulric sets to scribing the etchings upon a parchment...

Meanwhile, Desmond/Mondes takes some pleasure in slapping the dwarf about the face repeatedly... "Wake up Dwarfeeee!" hollers Mondes, but the dwarf sleeps on unperturbed.

Gustave sees that the manacle is chained to a 6in square steel plate which is bolted to the wall with two very solid looking bolts.

"Dieter!" calls Gustave, pondering the manacle and scratching his chin.

"Do you think the ogre-slayer and his trusty crowbar are up for something more challenging? Otherwise we shall have to leave this mangy creature here - that is, unless one of our more intellectual comrades has something special up their sleeve that can deal with heavy steel chain..." he finishes questioningly.

Ulric continues to copy the etchings on the manacle, then mentions absently.

"The chain is not the weak link in our new friend's bonds Gustave. A tourniquet and a sharp blade would also free him; although he likely would not be too grateful."

Ulric finishes his work then packs away his parchment.

"But let's try the chain first. I will do what I can. Dieter stand ready with your crowbar, you will need to act quickly after my spell is cast."

Ulric goes to the chain and grabs hold of a link halfway along. Focusing his power he casts The Benumbed Cincture. Once he is finished Ulric backs away quickly giving Dieter room.

"Now break it while it is still brittle!"

Not sure why, but being swept along in the general enthusiasm, Dieter applies his crowbar and his considerable brawn to the link indicated.

"I had considered this myself my friend", whispers Gustave to Ulric behind his hand as Dieter goes to work, "but there are those among who might find such an approach...offensive - let alone the fact that our new friends mouth might be less loose when he wakes to find he is now one limb short."

Ulric's sorcery brings a fierce chill to the air, and in particular his right hand positively glowers with frosty menace, glowing icy blue and sucking the warmth from the air around it.

Unaffected, the sorcerer grasps the chain in his arctic mitt and concentrates upon it until the chain itself goes icy cold.

The Dieter steps up and beats upon the frozen chain with his crowbar.

Once. Ding!

Twice. Bing!

Thrice. Ting!

And at last the chain is shattered.

Dieter grins, and the the dwarf sleeps through the whole exercise.

Josiane, increasingly concerned by this talk of torture, murder and amputation, hovers protectively by the sleeping dwarf's side during the above. She has that pale but determined look on her face again, and the knuckles of her hand are white as she grips the hilt of her sword...

O.O.C: Sorry, guys. My usual internet access points are out of action for the moment, so I can only get online sporadically. Hope it won't mess things up!

In the event I can't get online, Josiane's standing orders are to protect the prisoner as long as he takes no hostile action against the party. She will not countenance torture, murder or the lopping off of limbs, and will take whatever action she deems necessary to prevent these or similar occurring, although if this means combat, she will fight to subdue, not kill. A Knight of the Guardian Path does not tolerate torture or murder. So there! ;D

As Ulric and Dieter seem to have the dwarf prisoner under control, Desmond moves back through the doorway and out into the hall to help maintain a watch. He easily manages to watch both the passage they've come from (Desmond) and the passage that turned left at the door (Mondes).
