Dorgan, as always, will be right behind Dieter.

Armando, on the cusp of opening the door, turns to signal to his backup — and finds himself alone. He steps back into the courtyard and heads toward the rubble, the breached wall, and into the chapel.

Beringar switches back to his trusty spear. Having done so, he'll hurry forward to support Dorgan and Dieter.

"Be careful, everyone!" cautions Highbough. His Ire Spear is at the ready.

What does he see?
Dieter leads the surge over the piles of rubble and ruin, and into the chapel. The dim chamber within is still and all quiet. A thin veil of smoke curls lazily in the air, carrying a few glowing cinders along.

Nearest to the breach is the ruined altar. From there is the body of the chapel with rows of wooden pews scattered and smashed to make way for the great, dark pit that has been blasted in the stone floor. Beyond that, at the dim back of the chapel, are three doors which are shut and barred from this side. Along the rear of the chapel there is a mezzanine level overlooking the whole; it appears to be accessed via a narrow, wire-framed stair that adjoins the rearward wall.

There is nobody here...

Dieter moves inward slowly, testing the footing with each step before fully committing his weight to it. He glances all around, but his eyes keep returning to the pit in the floor.

From the way the floor buckles, he can tell that the pit came from below, correct? That the tar fiend came up and out, and that it's lair if any would be below?

Because that's what he's thinking.

Beringar follows Dieter closely, ready to skewer any would-be attacker on his spear.

Dorgan will examine the pit more closely. Is it dark or lit? How deep does it go? Can the dwarf tell how it was constructed?

From a distance of, perhaps, 20ft the hole appears to be some 15-20ft in diameter, with the stone work around the lip dipping down toward it rather steeply. It looks like it could have been punched out from below, perhaps. It doesn't appear to have been "constructed" rather than "caved in", something like a natural a sink hole.

Whatever might lie below is shrouded in darkness...

Dieter stops.

"Okay, nobody closer to the hole than 20 feet unless you're roped. I don't want to lose somebody down there."

(OOC: Does Dieter have his grappling hook and loyal rope? If not, is somebody carrying it for him?)
