This initial encounter turns out to be a Battle Royale!

So is the idea to wait for this encounter to end and see who wants to quickly roll up a new character (possibly a significant number  ) to join Heartless?

That looks to be the case. At least, we'll get practice making new characters, eh? :)

I'm trying to end it as fast as I can!

I'm just waiting for a non-combatant to stabilize Leudigar before he bleeds out... ;)

Dopey's on it. Just don't panic because your life is in the hands of someone named Dopey.

I didn't have any kind of plan going in, I just try to roll with whatever happens.

However, the prospect of a secondary group catching up with the current group does now seem a plausible one :)

Would Gunter's armor fit a hobbet?

I needed to think on that one.
It seems like dwarf-armor was ill-fit Bilbo Baggins, who instead wore the mail shirt of an Elf-princeling.
I think Dopey could wear dwarf-plate, at a pinch, but it will be heavy (compared to Hobbet-fit) and would not fit well so he would be AC 6 (rather than AC 5).

If you're heading back to camp, take it and sell it there. You might get enough for it to buy some real hobbit-fit plate. :)
