Olaf, Beringar, and Wen all try to back peddle out of contact with the Tar Fiend, but in truth its larger stride makes this almost futile.

With a seething cloud of dust surrounding it, the Tar Fiend takes two giant strides toward Wen before leaning directly over him to fire its deadly weapon. The red hot beam scorches the air between them, and reflects directly back that the Fiend's loathsome noggin! The beam vanishes instantly. As does the entirety of the Fiend's head and the upper part of its torso. The remaining limbs and body crash to the ground with a thunderous clatter, raising a final cloud of dust before a blessed silence descends...

| Mechanics

Oalf, Beringar and Wen all attempt to withdraw; let's presume they get the defensive fighting bonus (-4 to hit) and are parrying versus a larger weapon (the Fiend's pile-driver fists).

Referee rolls to determine whether it will continue to attack in combat, or use its gaze weapon. 2d6=7, so it's a gaze attack!

Who will it target? Wen dealt it 5 points of damage just now so he's the hot target, but Olaf and Beringar are at about the same proximity, so let's say 1-4=Wen, 5=Olaf, 6=Beringar. 1d6=2 it's Wen. The plan seems to be coming together.

It's gaze attack is reflected back at itself, so it saves versus disintegration: 1d20=2! It's all over for the Fiend. |

Wen would breath a sigh of relief. "Was not sure that would work, touch and go. Is everyone ok?' His hands would be tremble with adrenaline and his eye would be darting around.

ooc: OMG! we did it.

Ulric claps in admiration at Wen's display of power.

"Well done Wen!" he says rushing back toward the wall.

"Now back to it! Back up the ropes and press our advantage."

"Olaf, take my dagger to send those creatures back to the abyss."

Ulric hands his silver dagger to Olaf before going up a rope.

OOC: Outstanding Mgtremaine!

Dorgan barely can believe his eyes! But it's true, the Tar Fiend is dead.

It's not time to celebrate just yet though, as a quick scan of the orchard does not reveal the location of Gustave.

Dorgan will look back down into the courtyard. Can he see any better? Is the noxious cloud dissipating at all?

Torben

Torben's face paled in a look of panic as the tar fiend descended upon Wen, but now he looks onward with astonishment.

As the dust clears and the company rush to congratulate Wen, they notice his entire face is uncharacteristically sunburned, and his hair seems stuck in a blasted back fashion.

Highbough looks at young Wen with respect. "Nicely done, pale one!"

Are there any more enemies nearby or has the threat been neutralized for the moment?

Olaf whoops, "Well done Wen! I thought we were gonners this time!"

He takes the dagger with thanks. Olaf picks up the grapple hook and rope and swings it up on to the battlement to secure it for climbing again and prepares to climb...dagger between his teeth. Before he starts he looks around to see what everyone else is doing, though.

"Olaf, wait" Ulric says to the warrior. "We need to rest for a moment and tend our wounds. You look like you're about to keel over as to Torben and Beringer. I feel the same way. Let's tend to our wounds for a moment and then resume our attack."

None that are apparent...
