Highbough pulls the black hood of his cloak over his head, and to Olaf's astonishment vanishes utterly from sight!
Invisible Highbough then creeps through the curling vapours toward the match-shift bridge over the tar-moat, and the entrance to the blackened abbey.
By good fortune, the priests and wolves there are distracted by the giant, whose head and shoulders stand out through a gaping hole in the roof of a building some 80ft across the internal yard. It seems to be surveying the scene, and as its glare passes over him, Highbough has to remind himself that he is Invisible Highbough.
Barely two minutes later Invisible Highbough is as near to the "bridge" as he dares go. It is really nothing more than a few pieces of timber crudely thrown down to create a 10ft wide walkway over the tar moat. Invisible Highbough has the impression that the whole of it is a relatively haphazard addition to the abbey structure.
Crouching near the far side of the bridge, he can glimpse and hear the priests just inside the doorway, barely 30ft away, and is amazed that somehow they haven't detected him yet!
